Angus Houston reappointed for 3 years

Sydney Morning Herald

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...602432913.html

"Defence head Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston has been reappointed for another three years, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced today." - and much more about various senior military appointments - including the 'new leadership team' with new heads for each of the 3 services.

Is it common for a CDF to be reappointed?

thanks

I don't know how common it is overall but we are now on a hat trick. The last one was also reappointed, so it's not unprecedented.

And Binny got CAF - excellent choice, although JB, JQ and GE might feel slightly miffed?!?

Excellent news all-round. Angus' integrity is without question and Binny should be a great CAF.

This was the message distributed around the RAAF world.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF OF AIR FORCE

ANNOUNCING NEW CHIEF OF AIR FORCE

You would be aware that the Prime Minister has announced the new senior ADF leadership appointments which will take effect from 4 July 2008 and last for a period of three years.

I am pleased to announce that the new Chief of Air Force will be Air Vice-Marshal Mark Binskin. I congratulate Mark on this appointment. I know that he will enjoy the role - and that you will all give him the support that you have given me over the last few years, particularly during my time as Air Commander and as your Chief.

Other senior ADF appointments include CDF, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston extending his tenure as the Chief of the Defence Force by another three years. The rest of the leadership team will include: Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Lieutenant General David Hurley; Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Russ Crane; Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie. CDF has stated that this team is made up of very experienced officers and have each proven themselves in demanding previous appointments. They each inherit Services that are in fine shape but each has been chosen because they have the qualities required to lead their Service and the ADF into a demanding future.
I'm a bit disappointed for General Leahy isn't continuing on in some form. I thought he would have made an excellent CDF when the time comes!

Hey Aussie - Shep got the gig in July 05, so it'll be the standard three years by the time he hands over to Binny.

Binny has been on a real fast track - he was a one-star a year ago and will only have been ACAUST for a year before getting the CAF gig, leapfrogging JB, JQ and GE in the process. No doubt Binny will be an excellent CAF, especially under Angus's mentorship.

I wonder if they've put AVM Binskin on the fast track for CDF in three years time when Angus' tenure finishes. I can't imagine Ken Gillespie as CDF in three years time- too old- but I don't know of VCDF or CN and what they've done previously.
