Fly Buy...The airline that pays you to get your wings!

Have tried to search online to copy and paste it as a quote but can't find it.

"It's considered one of the most glamorous professions on the planet. If you believe the hype, commercial airline pilots spend their days among the clouds, jetting from one exotic place to the next. They enjoy public admiration and respect and can earn up to $350,000a year.
And yet there is a shortage of applicants for pilot jobs. Ian Woods president of AIPA says he is suprised aspiring pilots are not crushed in the rush for jobs with airlines."
It goes on to say inter alia about the Rex cadetship and how it is 100 or 50% paid for depending upon academic merit. "The gold standard is still the Qantas cadet pilot programme".
It is a little skewed in the fact their is no mention that it takes a fair while to reach the level of $350k p.a. if it does actually go that high (I am way off). I guess it is like saying actors make $10m a movie.
But hey public admiration and respect....insert smart arse/tongue in cheek comment about if managers were of the same ilk!

Shortage
Those kind of articles make great headlines for journos trying to get in the first few pages of the paper. It looks to me like we're still awhile away from a shortage though. Still plenty of CPL's working at Servos and Bottleshops. Perhaps more accurate to call it a shortage of guys with turbine time?

What you have written was totally off-course, for example stating that it is strange that there is a shortage of applicants for Pilot jobs and that it is known to be one of the most respected and glamorous careers on the planet.Have you ever cocidered the amount of time,effort,money and sacrifice one has to make to get to an airline job, IF EVER they are blessed enough to fly jets.Freshly qualified Pilots spend anything from $55-$90k to get their qualifications to then have to move north and look for anything and I mean anything or anyone that will let them fly a plane for peanuts.People have to leave their families or take them up north which sometimes doesn't work out too well, if you get the drift..
The General Aviation Pilot award wage is significantly lower then the average national wage.A newly qualified Pilot can expect anything from having to pay money TO the emplyer to get an amount of bout $30k.Working like a horse and keeping their heads down, and then having to pull out another $3-$20k to move up in the company to fly a larger aircraft for peanuts once again.The road to success is gruelsome and long, not many last and many fail to keep the motivation as the sacrifices and losses are far too great compared to the little glamour a jet job like Qantas has to offer.Once a Aviator reaches the stage to be considered for airline entry then they have gruelsome selection tests to go through and if worthy enough to be accepted then they have to pull another $20k+ out of their already dry wallets to pay for thei aircraft endorsement(25k for Virgin blue).to state that a Pilot can earn up to 350,000 is a total joke.A REX airlines First Officer starts at 40k and earns up to 50k and the captain makes anything from 62-85k approx.

If the journo reads that email, he/she is sure going to wonder why anyone would pay 350 G's for someone who didn't get past grade 3 literacy.

While your observations are to be applauded, I certainly hope you proof read the email before sending it.
Before we get the flamethrowers out guys, perception is a major part of the battle. One or two grammatical errors may be tolerated, but you tend to lose much of the message if it isn't delivered correctly.

it's a shame writing and sub ed standards at the Age have continued to slip to the point where the most basic structure of researching and writing a story are totally discarded.
The Age nonsense does however again highlight the fact that as an industry we are frustrated by media incompetencies but then again as an industry we have generally been slow to correct and change the agenda - so well done QFCapt and a few more of us shouldn't be shy to dash off a line or two before sign on.
PS: What you won't see in the comparitor info panel (the Age USED to do these really well) is the fact that said Age writer's hard earned professional journalistic 'endorsement' in the form a HECS fee (that's if he actually completed the uni course) is significantly less than the spend to gain a CPL at a country aeroclub.
Now where do I send the CV for the 350K?
