I'm amazed, surprised and pleased at the info that comes out after asking what appears to be a straightforward question.

It's the question you don't ask and all that...

'TLAW' I too am amazed & you sure have all the experts out in force here to. It's a valid question to some degree & some have answered it pretty well but am a little bemussed at what all the fuss is about with ref to 'over the fence' speed. I'd bet a zillion bucks (just short of what I have now) that almost every senior capt of heavy metal these days grew up with that saying installed in the back of their heads. Been handed down since Noah first test flew his ship! I remember hearing it God knows when in my early days of training, said by an instructor that would have heard it from his instructor also.
Who really needs to know what it means exactly anyway? As long as you fly by the numbers whether it be a C150 or a B747 all is designed to work, the first time & every time! That's the way it was test flown & certified by the manufacturers in the first place! 1.3 Vs 'over the fence'. Not meant to be taken literally but it's commonly known as over the Threshold or thereabouts.
Anyway that's my thoughts, no need for anyone to go beating their chest saying nasty things.

As for bent firewalls? simply poor A/C handling, no more no less!
