Another email sent off. Hopefully we can reach more ears this way than a few letters to the deaf ears of our elected officials.

Yep, great idea guys. This sort of propoganda is pre-emptive groundwork for the inevitable pleas to allow our fellow indian/asian aviators to assist with our "shortage."

...hahahah 'wrongway' not surprised at that young C......, seems we have a tendency to make hero's out of fools, media wise that is. The list of late is huge! Sells papers no doubt!
Maybe the media could get some of the GD's of the world to behave like C...., oh sorry they do already thru thuggery (spelling incorrect but you get my point) but let's not spoil it by going against what the media foolishly believe !

Err, Media Watch is only interested in cases of dodgy journalism. Where is the dodgy journalism in the "bloodbath" article?

When a company issues a press release (as appears to have happened in this case), and a journalist builds an article around it, as has happened in this case, that is perfectly normal, run-of-the-mill jounalism.

It is not dodgy journalism simply because you disagree with some of the "facts" contained in the press release!

The Media Watch people will be scratching their heads over why they are getting your emails.

Somebody said something about "getting our side of the story out".

What is your side of the story? That pilots are leaving Rex because they can get better pay elsewhere?

What is the story in that? Workers are always leaving their current employer when they can get something better elsewhere (not just pilots). Always have and always will.

If you get a reply from Media Watch, copy it into this thread won't you?

Thumbs down aircraft

Journalism is when a story is put out that is researched. Copying press releases into newspapers is generally only accepted practice when it publishes company announcements of undisputed facts, like the announcement of mergers, new production sites, projects, etc.

The situation here is different as Rex are making it a habit to put out opinion pieces (if they weren't would they be discussed at length here??) and the journos are printing them unchecked and without any balance in the argument. Hence an issue for people here and media watch.

If anyone could just go around publishing any BS as journalisms we wouldn't need actual journalists, would we now?

PlankBlender,

Companies make frequent announcements. These announcements may be for reasons of statutory financial disclosure, or they may simply be to give information to the public. It is normal for these announcements to contain some opinion.

To make the announcement, they may call a press conference or simply send out a "press release".

It is perfectly legitimate for a media outlet to pick up the press release and turn it into an article. This is what is supposed to happen. The journalist will usually "build" an article around the press release by added a few extra details, such as relevant historical and background information.

In these cases, the journalist is under no obligation to independently verify the claims/facts/assertions contained within the press release. In most cases, it is impractical to do so, and the journalist will make it clear in the article that he is largely just quoting from the press release (keeping the company "honest", of course, is the ASIC).

A story built from scratch, on the other hand, will require the journalist to assemble all the facts himself. This, of course, is a lengthy and costly process and the journalist will need solid justification before embarking on this course.

Rex are making it a habit to put out opinion pieces ... the journos are printing them ... without any balance in the argument.
If REX are making more announcements than usual, then this would be for the purpose of informing the public, which is a good thing.

The "bloodbath" article wasn't about any "dispute" so the issue of balance is not applicable. The article was purely reporting a few facts.

Hence an issue for people here and media watch.
No issue for Media Watch. It would only be an issue for Media Watch if the journalists were to distort, misrepresent or improprely slant the facts contained within the press release.

I think you're missing where your so-called story really is. It seems to me you believe that exploitation of the pilots is the real reason for the flight cancellations.

If this is the case then you first need to realise that that is a possible story behind the story of why the flights are being cancelled.

I suggest you form a group called, something like "the exploited pilots", then issue a press release detailing your "facts". Be aware, however, that your press release may or may not be picked up.

Aircraft, are you actually a journo?

You have the same ability to write a whole lot of buit that doesn't make much sense and nobody really wants to listen to in the first place! Oh, and its all so you get a reaction from the public, whatever floats your boat i guess.
