Getting back into it. A thread of youthful uncertainty!

Hi folks,

I commenced flying lessons in July 2006 and ceased my flying indefinitely in January 2007 due to a lack of funds and a wish to concentrate on finishing my HSC.

I've now finished the HSC and am working a part time job here and there, my workplace conveniently being located next to the airport. Anyway I am seriously getting the flying bug again and am weighing up the situation. My last flight was at the end of January 2007, and my next flight was to be my first area solo, which I never proceeded with due to halting my training. Would you think it's feasible for me to get back into the game, and what would the situation likely be? Would I be required to basically re-learn just about everything or do you think the flying school would be happy to pick up where I left off basically? No doubt I will need to do a check flight (or two, or three) of some sort in order to demonstrate that I am still competent with what I have learned.

I will be asking these questions direct to the flying school in due course, but I wish to gain an opinion from here before I take any further action regarding the matter...

Any help you can provide me with would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Bankstownboy,

It wouldn't be necessary to go back to the begining. Your instructor will probably conduct a few revision lessons, ensure you are at a safe solo standard (for the T/A and CCT sequences) and continue where you left off.

I have had students return after long breaks from flying, and while it varies from student to student, if they put the effort into their preparation before flight, most ease themselves back into it relatively quickley.

Have fun getting back into it!

Good to see that yr not letting the fortunes that it costs to fool gravity ruin yr chance at being a Capt some day, drugs must be cheaper !

On a more serious note all testing of a candidates skills is to see if he/she can pass the standard required. From basic flying a C150 for Eg to being given a CMD on a B777 the basic concept is still applied. You need to demonstrate the required standard & that can only be done thru proper training. This is done because humans vary so much in their capabilities. If you have a few hours already under yr belt & felt confident at the last time you flew then a decent instructor will asses yr standards & knowledge gained since last time you flew & go from there. If you are told by yr new instructor that you need to start all over again & re do it all I'd be suspect of that, unless you know you where borderline hopeless in the first place, but only you know that!

Good luck with it all, today there are more opertunities than ever I believe. If in say 10 yrs time & PPRUNE is still running & us old crusty buggers are still kickin' drop buy again & tell us that what we said here all those years ago was good stuff.........otherwise our wisdom has all been for nufin' !

Thanks for the replies Captains Wally and Mo!

I feel confident that I would still be competent in my flying capabilities (trying not to sound pretentious here!) and I still remember all my calls and emergency procedures etc. pretty clearly, so I feel that it definitely would only be a matter of a few checks and revision and then picking up where I left off.

I'm also going to do some more study of my Bob Tait BAK book before I even approach the flying school again, so that I am completely confident I can do it, also so I'm not wasting the school's time, or my time and money.

Thanks again for your help Captains!

And I definitely will be here in 10 years time telling you how right you were.
