Corrections to the above:
*4 weeks paid leave only!
*Auckland base runs 24/7 with alot of "back of the clock" flying and min. rests (12-14 hours).
*Tax free allowances more like 6000/7000 KIWI DOLLARS (!) and remain behind inflation and overnight/layover expenses.
*3 Jetcon guys have transfered, not "lots". The rest decided not, after conditions became know. Jetcon total $$ package is ahead of Pac/Polyblue.
*Oz QF crews touring through NZ to fill in crew shortages there at Jetcon.
Happy Landings

Cheers yigy,
Couple more questions for you. Are the guys generally members of ALPA? Just wondering how it works as a contract pilot, ie. can you negotiate terms in the future?
Also what is the basic set up of the recruitment process? Im under the impression that it is pretty much just an interview. Is that about right or am I just being hopeful?
Finally is there any consensus on the best way of getting the NG rating?
Cheers

Jetcon vs Pac Blues
Much rather be at Jetcon. Just seems to be the place for me, and believe it or not the team is pretty good in most aspects. Had a meeting a couple of weeks ago to confirm that it is here longterm and rising to the competitive challenge that has apparently been laid down
The reality is if you do decide to move on. It looks good in your logbooks and on your CV that you have been trained to a Qantas regime.
And finally goodluck to you in finding a slot to do the NG rating. apparently Qantas Mel is heavily booked through to Feb-Mar 2008.
All da best L&L

For that to happen they would have to employ their piltos, so no, I don't see it happening in the near future. The going rate is $30K AU for a 737 rating, that doesn't include 5-6 weeks living over there.
Chocks
Risworth contractors get nearly 6 weeks (28 days), I think that's because Conair are employees, and public holidays are recognised.
737Capt
The roster patterns are becoming progressively less attractive. One of the new tricks seems to be 2 am finish, with an avo shift or standby to back it up.

My 5 cents worth.
I reckon if the companies bonded you instead of making you pay for the type rating, they could at least get 2 years out of you and if you decide to leave before hand then they will recoup some of the cost if not all of the costs.
It also provides the company with a bit of Pilot retention as fence hopping seems to be the order of the day at the moment.

The roster patterns aren't bad @ JC. Lets face it you are there to work so you will do some hours. If you do over 65hours there is incentive pay. A few overnights nothing serious.

The type rating through QF for JC is subsidised - total cost around A$15k (accommodation/expenses your own cost) . The problem remains though that if you ask a pilot to pay for a type rating he/she feels no sense of commitment to the company. So lots of pilots are just coming to get some jet hours then move on to something more lucrative or career orientated. Fair enough I guess.

Have recently had an offer from JC...with the "bargin" of a $15K AUD 737 classic type rating thrown in.
Needless to say I politely turned it down and offered an alternative of being bonded for a period of time.
I don't expect an email anytime soon

Good on ye haughtney1.
Don't pay for your job - easy. These outfits (VB Jet* Pacblue Jet Connect etc) are making plenty of $ - if they need workers - it's their obligation to meet training requirements. Dont be sucked in guys and gals - simply say no. The money is much better in your back pocket than the CEO's bonus.

Training for contractors
For those of you currently working for the likes of Jetconnect and Pac Blue how are your training requirements met?
I take it the company pays for the sim, accommodation etc? For the likes of Pac Blue where the nearest sim is Aus are sim trips scheduled on the back of a normal route?
My guess is that paying for a rating may eventually disappear in Aus but NZ could be a way off, I think there are just too many people trying to get that jet job.

Costs during training?
Licensed&Lethal: I was wondering if JC are picking up the costs of training ( accommodation/airfares ) in ML during the endoresment phase and is a potential FO employed with the company whilst in the training stages? Thanks for ad.

Duty of Care: To answer...... Your basically left to your own device to sort out the rating. JC will book you training slots but thats about all they will have to do with you till you get back to NZd. They have started providing the airfare back from MEL and they have also started to do a few extra sims for the guys when they get home with the rating- These cover the NZ IF renewal and JC procedures. You then do about 2 weeks induction where they put you up at the mighty centra. Then your sent off to start your line training..... hope that helps

Thanks for that info. Anyway, sorry to be a bother, but do you need a 73 type rating for DEC, or can you get a job by doing the rating?? Plenty of Boeing time but not 737.... Where are the basings?? I know this is a rumour network, but I would appreciate any info available, I'm just too lazy to look elsewhere if the truth be known.
Thank You
