Tigerschmitts And Stampes

The gang of four, (instructors Les Thompson, Alan Pearson, Paul Bash and Ron Pill), at the Canberra Aero Club, ca 1958, called our DH82s, (VH-BEU and VH-FBU), "Tigerschmitts".
It was probably Dick Nell from Goulburn who turned on the magic at Jamestown. Still going strong, he and Margaret rocked up to the AAAA weekend at Echuca in May in BVU and gave us a display of smoothness and grace. (In contrast to Pip Boorman's snarling show pony on steroids. 'Orses f' courses.)

Smile The Classic Victa

As already mentioned, the Victa Airtourer. Only flown the 115 (VH-MQL). Might take while to get up there, but once level, bloody good machine. Nice to land also.

Undoubtedly the finest flying aircraft to ever enter airline service.
Never heard a pilot who flew the aircraft have anything other than pure love for the machine
Direct lift control has never been beaten
Dual auto pilots with three channels

............................Learjet/s.....................those beasts you 'strap on' (Oh boy I bet that gets ones mind going !)....................a plane where you have to shoe horn yourself into the thrill seat is a real pilots plane, anything else that has a button that makes the hosty come is pure lazyness !
Horses for course, if it flies, floats or F.... then it WILL cost you money!...........

Cool

Best was/is Fokker 28, after 10,000 hrs on type was like an old sock, comphy and warm to feel.
Bigger F-100 is an F-28 on steriods, not as much "fun" but still a delight.
For pure power and feel, Lear 31 when new and polished, FL510, the earth is round and the sky is black.

Have safe fun out there, I am happy in the Simulator, I don't have stress any more, BUT I AM A CARRIER, all in the process of training enthusiastic Pilots

Happy New Year

Auster J5B

Warning - thread wander....

Auster? VH-ASK? Was that south Qld? Was there by any chance an older gent by the name of Gus Mauch flying that aircraft many years ago? What happened to Gus?

Learjets? Pilots aeroplane? Wasn't there a big counter-weight attached to the control column of the 30 series that tended to gave the aircraft hellish longitudinal feel with any sort of manoeuvring at a decent clip?

Some great handling helicopters out there as well.

For mine - C180....

Best/nicest for handling for me would have to be the Ag - Husky. Best performance LR 31A but never brave enough to take it to 51,000 ft as the consequences of a "blow out" up there didn't bare thinking about!

Ramble, I was soloed in gliders by Gus Mauch and given my glider aerotow approval by him also.

The last I heard of Gus he was doing OK, although he would be quite an elderly gentleman these days.

Yeah Dave.............I flew the old Wards 'portofino' P166 that had the IGSO540s in the 70's. The old girl flew OK, and it was a good solid IF platform too.

I did my P166 endorsement with Wes Guy.............we went out around Craigieburn and Wes shut one engine down for all the single-engine airwork. Time to get it going again for the return to Essendon and ............... it wouldn't start, and so my first landing on the aircraft turned out to be a one-engine inoperative landing!

Some of my favourites.

Singles.

C180/185
Tiger
Winjeel/T6/T28 all good fun.
Pitts
Supercub
Mig 15
Multi
Twotter
Turbo commander
Most larger twins (>5700kgs) and certainly passneger jets I have flown are a means of transport, the enjoyment is from the pay check and the time off, not the individual aircraft.

In my mind a pilots airplane is where a company designs a cockpit around a pilot and not what a designer thinks is good. Bandit had a great simple and logical cockpit design. The twin otter had buttons and switches all over the bloody place. Cessna also made great single crew cockpits on their twins and vans.
Flying wise the C-404 was great. good handling, stable, you really had to baby the engines and nose wheel especially on rough strips but she did exactly what you wanted it to do. The best sounding pistons after a merlin and big radials.
For pure fun you cant beat the twotter. getting off the ground and landing in the length of most small shop car parks is brilliant.
B200 is an awesome machine once its off the ground. Great perfomance, solid gear and fun to fly.

The two nicest aircraft I've flown would be the Piper Cub and the GAF Nomad.

But haven't flown a cub in a loooooong time, but want to get back into one. I fly the Nomad most days, and it is just a great, fun machine to fly. Plus all the Aussies think I have balls of steel to fly one!

Do you really think so?

Well, I reckon the Real Pilot's aircraft was the last one you strapped on to fly.

GAF Nomad
Yes empacher48, I've flown the Nomad too. It was my first turbo prop and I thought it was the best. I've flown a few more types since then and I'm sure you will too.
Best twin - B737 all series
Best four engine A/C - B747-200
Best three engine A/C - B747-200 with one shutdown!

Uuuuum. nah, let me think eerm.

I'd have given my left one to have flown any of the first three of dmussens and I trained on the DHC1. So they get my vote.

But I'm a bit confused about the question.

A true pilots aeroplane is, granny could fly it or you need to have the heart of a lion, the eye of an eagle, the reflexes of Scumacher and the hand of a surgeon?

Give me granny's any time then I can really enjoy the view in peace and tranquility and on that note the C172 is really hard to beat for a modern ship.

Oh and FTDK we shall have to have a game of 500 when we next meet so I can if necessary play a lay down misere.
