Animal. Yup, Ian was with YC in CS. Lost track of him after I left.

I remember an F-28 aborting a TO after losing a Spey at Goroka, Jay rest his great soul, was in command. There wasn't any runway left by the time the wheels stopped. I believe the F28-1000 required a dispo to operate into Goroka due to the slope.

Bravo. Those trees were big when I left 22 years ago! A mission C206 lost a donk on TO at Goroka maybe 30 years ago and turned back. He proved the inevitable theory.

Some pictures received from BH...look at the first two and tell me he didn't land down a 6+% slope with T/O flap set.

Torres yes a dispo required to operate the mighty F 28 into GKA due to the slope...we also, due to WAT limits, often had to land flap 25 due to landing-go around performance requirements...touchdown speeds pretty close to the 170kt tyre limit speed and required precisely flown approach to touchdown and carefull use of brakes to avoid fuse plug meltdown.

Definately down hill but what is the mound of earth? Is he on 17R or the Highlands Highway? I don't recall a mound of earth alongside the runway?

Correction. I can see the flattened fence. On his way to Henganofi by road!

I was trying to work that out too...I think he is through the fence at the bottom and sitting half on the highlands highway turned to port...remember the highway runs around the bottom of the airport and then up the western side.

That's how we used to find it in the fog

Edit: In fact I am sure about it...the aircraft is turned about 90 degrees to port...looking over the top of the fuselage in pic 2 you can see a fair way down the valley...the way he should have come in under the fog. I think bravohotel said the pics were taken shortly after the prang...30 minutes or so?

The landing lights are still retracted and Takeoff/approach flap set...I'd say he was tooling around slow with 1st stage flap set, maybe the gear down already, spotted the top of the runway and landed with no other thought entering his head.

Landing checklist not complete whichever way it happened.

Chuck. Correct. Look at the terrain ahead of the aircraft in the first photo - it's facing north east. It's the fence at the bottom of the air strip, where the highway curves around.

Two weeks AOC suspension? At least work won't interfere with JMB's drinking time!

Slight correction to the above - she is resting 90 degrees to port after having gone through the southern fence coming to rest on the edge of the road that is actually a side road from the highway (the road that goes from West side around the bottom of the airport to the coffee factories on the East side) - the road has recently been sealed.

The fence was breached well 'left' of the runway (heading in the 17 direction) - purely speculating but maybe a groundloop to the left was attempted?

Those trees up the top end of the strip opposite the Post Office are definitely tall trees these days and make the prospect of downhill landings very interesting indeed...

Sister ship ALG is still alive and currently parked at Goroka.

I'm impressed that the rescue vehicle was actually in attendence and not out being used as a pmv by the wantoks. Even more so that there are no buai stains on it...yet

troppo looking at the headlights (not broken/covered in mud) and the paintjob on the bonnet I'd say it's about 2 days old

Reports I have heard people living around PBFs shed SW of the runway (west of the main road) were scared sometime before he landed,I guess when he was trying for 35L. Yes the yellow crash support vehicle is quite new (they have 2)....can't see the big crash tender,it was serviceable a week or so ago as I saw it out for its morning run up & down the runway.I can't imagination what JMB had to say about this!!!

I can...I would suggest the pilot concerned, and anyone nearby when JMB was told, has never heard 'f*ck' used as often in one continous, unending 'stream of conciousness' and in quite so many different contexts in their entire lives

Erudite chap is Birrell

I doubt the groundloop attempt, the props are in remarkable condition considering the fence chewing, the Starb'd prop showing no ground damage, even though it was probably minimum revs in a slide turning right.

Is Col still involved with Airlink?

I remember Moresby Birrell telling a story about sitting in the nose locker of a ballus heading down to Madang 4 the weekend years ago. Bet he was glad he has put on too much beef to fit in this one

Chimbu, didn't you ever come cross TFI in PX? His best line was when he reentered the PX crew room one day after going out to the F28 and told it was still u/s. As he walked in someone asked him how the balus was.. his answer..

The f****ing f****ers f****ed.

Message understood!!

Yes knew TFI well...except the incident you mention was after he'd had a major flight control system failure just airborne at GKA and survived it.

I still maintain that few people could use "****" as an adjective, noun, verb, pronoun and adverb and in the past, present and future tenses with quite the skill of JMB.
