Looking for advice on getting back into flying?

Just looking for advice on getting back into the industry after a substantial break over 5 yrs now. Live on east coast and the old story, commitments are preventing me leaving the city. Have previous charter exp and an out-dated instructors rating, hours around the 800 mark, with 500 command. Any suggestions on what to do, presently work full time, so this will have to be a part-time re-entry to the industry, until in a better position. Any advice welcomed.
Thanks

Faced with a similar predicament myself, although I more than 4 times the quals required for the airlines, I just turned 50. The similarity is that even though we not make it into the "airlines" those that do will leave spaces to fill and pilot training isn't keeping pace with the vacancies.
My suggestion, for what it is worth, find an aero club or dedicated school and get your rating back then work on the weekend. Get a feel for it again and offer your weekend employer a bit of rostering flexibility on the weekend. Best of luck with it.

Turbinedreamer,
I know a few guys in your position at the moment, most of them had to go back out bush to get back in the game, but as was previously suggested get your quals current again and see how you go with the smaller outfits. Being stuck in the city somewhat limits your options (I don't envy your position), I guess it depends on how badly you want to get back into the game and what your situation is (ie financially sound, wife + kids etc..).. PM me I may have one or two leads for you though, from mates who have/about to move on to the next step up, it's still the same old story, right place, right time, right attitude/personality will get you the job.

TurbineDreamer,

You have made the first step, making the decision to get back into GA.

My advice for what it is worth, have a clearly defined goal as to where you want to end up. Then set upon a path to achieve that goal. It can be hard with a family, I am fortunate enough to have one myself. Always make time for your family and they will support you through the change.
Remain focussed and positive, never let the knock backs get to you.

As to the flying, get your ratings renewed and start now throwing mud at walls - eventually some will stick.

Best of luck with it, it can be done.
