cooking???

well winters here which means tourist season is over and my pub work has dried up (not to mention the flying as well.)

So for the first time in a little while I'm home alone and have to fend for myself and I realised I can't cook. Any tips for cheap easy and hopefully tasty food. I was told about a post "1000 ways of mince" but I couldn't find it with a search

Chicken tonight, Kan tong and all those other jars of ready made stuff. Just fry some chicken or beef, chuck the sauce in, simmer, boil some rice to go with it and you've got a meal.

I assume you know how to boil rice???

Make a big batch, buy some of those foil trays with lids and freeze the leftovers and you should be able to get a few meals from one cooking session.

(Living in Kowanyama, one becomes quite skillful at removing weevils from rice! )

Make 2 minuite noodles but throw in a handfull of frozen chopped veg (peas n corn r best), an egg (to poach in the broth), a small tin of tuna and lotz and lotz of tobasco sauce.

As far as cheap goes, you cant go past Noori rolls (the seaweed aint cheap, but the rice, tuna, mayo, avocado and cucumber are. About 70 cents a pop (versus $3.00 a pop at the bloke in the food hall). Bit fiddly tho.

You can make baked beans pretty sensational by throwing through some red onion, lemon juice, a bit of minced garlic anf whole egg mayo. Granted it makes it a bit more exy, but its a noticable difference.

Baked Potatoes! Go to Woolies, get the biggest spud you can get, bung it in the oven at 180C for about an hour, poke it, if it collapses under your finger, its ready. Dont bother wrappin it in alfoil like some fools do, the crunchier the skinn the beter. Split it open, semi mash the spud, slop on some coleslaw (leftover KFC ones are really good ;-), a bit of chese and sour cream (if your not as fat as me) and you've got a meal fit for a king.

One caution though, if you're a really lousy cook, stay clear of things that need to be fried, baked of grilled, they will prove most hazardous to your health (in more ways than one)

Oh and one other caution, cabbage and flying do not mix very well. Cabbage creates intestinal gass which can be bloody painfull when you go up and your intestine turns into a balloon.

Anyhow, enjoy!

spag bol is always good

rice or noodles, frozen vegies (heated up obviously), chicken pieces and/or sausage

chicken schnitzel- chuck some jar spaghetti sauce and some cheese on it, in the oven and there you have some dodgy parma

meat pies, buy in bulk if you can...

potato is good, can bake, boil, mash or shallow fry in little slices

basically just find a heap of stuff, chuck it all together and if it tastes good, make it again!
all that matters is that you like it. ends up the same anyway.
best tip is to make a lot at once, and freeze the rest in portions to throw in the microwave for another time.

its not really cooking.. more like heating things and throwing them together

Here's some suggestions that will keep the bank account fat and the belly fit.

Spaghetti sans bolognaise - Just whack some spaghetti of your choice in a pot with tap water and boil till 'Al Dente'. Cook some mince in another pot and when that's cooked whack it on a plate full of spaghetti and there ya' go.

Boiled rice with veg - Cook vegies of your choice in a pot with water till they're soft(ish) and throw them onto a plate of steamed rice. All you need is a rice cooker to steam the rice, fairly simple process. They usually require you to add water to make the steam!

Mince burger - Get a burger bun (or two slices of bread, or a roll), cook a mince pattie, grate some cheese, grate some carrot, get some lettuce, get some alfalfa sprouts and put it all in the buns/slices/roll...

Hope that helps!

G'day Troppo, Wondered where you got to. Thought for a while that the bad b******s in Suva had gotcha! :

Haven't you ever heard of the seasonal girl friend that is just gagging to shack up with a prized pilot and cook and clean for him
Yes, well, if F one J one is anything like PNG there would be more than a few local lovelies more than willing to volunteer so may one assume that you are talking from experience?

Fhead; Might I suggest that you invest in a good cook book? Or...........'phone Mum for advice. (I did that more than once years ago!!)

Troppo are you crazy!?

You invest in the 6 month lease in November and carry it through the wet then begin random acts as the dry begins .... I made the mistake once (first season)... never again ....

bok choy recipe

a bunch of baby bok choy - chopped roughly, bacon - diced, a glove of garlic - crushed and a splash of oyster sauce.

cook the bacon and then leave it to the side. chuck in the bok choy and cook for 4-5mins in a wok/frypan, throw in the garlic, bacon and oyster sauce and heat for a further 2 mins.

serve on the side of your favourite chinese dish.

rice and dim sims go well with this

You ever heard of atkins?

You shoulda seen the greazy ****e my (English) Grandparents ate their whole lives...right up until they died in their sleep in their late 80s. Not a lot wrong with my collesterol...has been slightly elevated since I was skinny and 17.

Chicken curries....spag boll (secret recipe)...steak and salads.

All things in moderation.

Few cardiac protective grape juice drinks to boot!
