Flying in Perth

Hello All

I have been using Pprune for a good while now and this is my first post in D&G - I don't recognise a lot of your usernames - so hello!

I am looking at getting some flying done in Perth this year (SEP recreational hire - PPL), as I am hoping to spend a couple of weeks there with my girlfriend in the summer (never been before). I have been looking around the City area for accommodation and recreation etc (I must say those beaches do look very attractive) and I really want to soak up as much of Perth as I possibly can.

I am looking for a local flying club at a nice airfield (close to the city but open enough to be able to enjoy the country) - I really don't know much about the area for this, hence me being here! Can any of you advise or let me know of my options? Sorry for being picky, but this really is my first attempt at researching the place...

Why did I choose Perth when visiting Australia for the first time? In short - I don't really know but I have heard a lot of great things about the place

Best wishes
Maz

Hey mate,
HA ur coming over here and in 8 hours im going over there to the UK
I would recomend the Royal Aero Club at jandakot airport. Probably the best aero club around this area. About 40-60 min drive from city, close to coast, not far from country areas.

Google it up. The royak aero club in jandakot.

Good luck

I am not sure how much private hire you can do at Serpentine. There is some flying out there (Sports Aviation group from memory) but I think most people there are owners. Worth a visit if you want to see a lot of homebuilts and other interesting bits and pieces.

At Jandakot there a few big organisations there. As someone has mentioned there is the Royal Aero Club of WA. There is also The Aeroplane Company and Air Australia. Those three are probably the biggies and between them all you can hire pretty much any of the common light singles and a range of light twins between them.

There are numerous smaller operators there as well. Try googling Jandakot Aiport from memory they have a list of the operators on the field. I am sure any of the schools would be happy to give you a hand getting familiar with JT procedures (it can get busy there sometimes) so perhaps stick your head in and see which one takes your fancy the most!

Most of all enjoy your stay in Perth!

Man 14 hours in a jet just to be surrounded by more poms!
Anyway enjoy your stay in Perth and keep in mind that Australia is only 4 hours away and really well worth the visit.

Hey Maz

I know why you're going to PER!

Mate hope you have a great time, I know I do when I go there. If you are into scuba diving check out some of the outfits at Freo, otherwise there is always plenty of fun to be had elsewhere in Perth.

Cheers,

ABX

Guess who?!

Royal Aero Club of Western Australia at Jandakot is a good place to start. Hope you're used to busy airports though - heaps of Red Barons and Yellow Perils train there. If not, leave it till a weekday. Obviously a lot quieter then.

If you plan a fly across country, going down to Bunbury or Busselton is good. Lovely views all the way down the coast. Takes about 1.1hr to Bunbury (C172) and you'll find a friendly bunch there. Affiliated to RACWA I believe. Maybe 15 minutes further south to Busselton. Both asphalt strips. Busselton is longer and wider. These two destinations are a short cab ride into town for things to see & do.

Course you could always go further down to Margaret River. Very cool.

Some sites for you to have a butcher's...

mazzy,
All good advice except one important thing missing. Before you go anywhere as PIC in Oz you will need a certificate of validation for your foreign licence.

Suggest you contact our friendly, highly efficient staff at our regulators office to see what is reqd.

Very good point that Jock.

CASA's website may give the details you need. (Link below). Alternatively, you'll have to phone them. Don't bother with email. Be lucky to hear from them before your departure. I'm still waiting for a return email since way before Xmas - and that's after a back-up phone call.

Get onto it Mazz, I think others on here have said the required paperwork takes a matter of months rather than weeks.

I fly out of Jandakot when the finances allow me to fly at all. Contact Chuck at air australia +61893325011 and he will advise what's needed and if you are going to use his planes he will probably help get the paperwork sorted. If you prefer the Royal Aero Club they also have murray field down near serpentine. The SABC at serpentine have a club aircraft which they may hire out but I've only visited them once so I'm no expert on that.

Check out the internet for accommodation and post what takes your fancy and I'll check the places out for you and get back to you with info. Let us know the budget and level of accommodation you want and I'll see if I can suggest anything.

By the way the summer is now, so when do you expect to come?

The SABC club aircraft at Serpentine is ony available to members. Of course, there are plenty of members who would be only too willing to take a visitor for a fly in it If you visit on a flying Sunday you could possibly score a ride in one of the dozens of fabulous homebuilts that live there.

At Jandakot, Minnovation is very PPL - friendly and run by a former Pom - definitely worth a visit.

Enjoy your trip

This thread has been saved - brilliant info thanks

Went on Expedia the other day to try and get an idea of cost - I think we (2 of us) are looking at minimum of £2,500 for two weeks there. A lot of cash for 2 weeks However - thanks for the offer of helping us find a place - I think that will be a great help

It may very well be next summer

For your benefit mazz...

To give you something to look forward to, here's two pics I took on an average winter flying day over Perth in RACWA's tiger.
