First job - Please help (OZ)

Hi everyone,

I currently live in Brisbane after completing my MECIR and now have 250 hrs. I have already sent out resumes to all companies in the Australian Business Directory and followed up with phone calls but to no avail, either because they are currently not employing or because I do not have enough experience.

My next step will probably to buy a car and start traveling around Australia and visiting all the aviation companies along the way asking for work.

If anyone has any information at all; ANY – perhaps the places where low hour pilots might be able to find jobs, how to go about driving around AUS looking for a job, some of your own experiences that you found in trying to get that elusive 1st job or anything at all that might be able to help in some way or another, I would very much appreciate it! (even where to buy a good, not too expensive 2nd hand car that will get me round Australia!)

Thanks everyone, its much appreciated

Also... unfortunatley the MECIR was a waste of time at this stage of your career, better to wait until you had between 600 and 1000 hours. This is to gel in all the VFR stuff first. No body - I repeat NO BODY in their right mind would hire a newbie to fly ME aircraft in IMC as their first Job - you gotta cut your teeth first son!
What a load of bollox! I know of plenty of NT operators that prefer the CIR over the instructors rating for newbies. Ever flown VFR during the smoke haze of a dry season?

Good luck to you Skimmer. Hear everyone, learn who to listen to and get yourself a camera. You're in for a great time!

cptdoug, do you wanna chew up some more **** and spit it out, because I hadn't met someone who does it so well until I read that. Best you continue your holidays and keep on going with school next year, .

I know of a couple of operators who put brand newies into the left seat of a twin and send them off into the wild grey/black yonda during the wet, it's not rocket science.

Skimmer, perhaps the best advice one could give for your career, is to discard all of cptdoug's post, and do a search for this frequently asked question in Dunnunda. Pleeeeeeeenty of posts about it, and mostly informative. You won't find a job sitting on your arse in lovely Brisbane. And perhaps one of the worst things you could do, is get yourself a nice shiny grade 3 instructor rating, .

But just remember, the world of charter awaits you, .

I know of operators that will not hire you if you do not hold an Instructor Rating and worked as an Instructor
I know of operators that will NOT hire you if you DO or HAVE!
Chances are cptdoug he/she probably doesn't have another $5000 + (i don't know the going rate for one) to spend on an instructor rating when there are jobs out there.
skimmmer.aus check out AFAP - there's a few skydiving gigs going
Never once has an employer asked me whether I had an instructor rating - check and training within a company yes but not an instructor rating!!!!!

Skimmer - A MEIR can never be a liability to an up and coming young pilot, even if you spend the next few years peddling a C206 or 210 (you may have to invest a few $ in renewals however)

Go get some GA experience while you are (hopefully) unencumbered with a girlfriend, mortgage etc.

Listen to what Triple Captain, Mr Buzzy, Morno and DFB are saying!

Cheers

If you had money to waste on a destructor rating, my advice would be to spend it on your MECIR and ATPL subjects. You dont want be in a position where you've been in a company for 12 months and they need you to start flying twins but when they realise you dont have a MECIR, they give it to someone else. Also a common problem I see these days, is guys with 2500hrs are stalling their career because they don't have the time to do their ATPL's. In times like we have now, it best to get these things out of the way then you just have to worry about time building.
Enjoy the ride

I would strongly suggest you check out the afap website. Have seen 3 jump pilot jobs on there in the last couple of weeks. Latest is on a 200 series Cessna, good aircraft to build experience on and take to a charter mob.

A full C207 for PJE

Will make for some interesting take-offs out of HOX

Move up

Howdie mate,

I moved to the Kimberley with about 190 hours (packed my suitcase and jumped on a plane). Found a couple of jobs doing different things, bought a car for $500. 6 months later landed my first flying job.

3 years after moving there I had around 2300 hours, with twin time, and went off to the airlines.

I went up with my ATPL subjects, no CIR and no Instructor rating. So I think the big thing is just to get yourself up there, get some money coming in... and just wait. Patience is the biggest thing of all.

Good luck my friend

skimmer,

go to the kimberley, plenty of blokes up there who land their first gig with around your time with companies like alligator and slingair (kunnunurra) and king leopold air (broome). If you have 250 TT with 20 hours in a 210 you could get a look in with broomeav aswell.

Would be a very good time to send a resume to these guys as their hiring time is getting close, BUT you wont get the job unless you're in town.

I know a few blokes who have gone and got 1000-1500 hours of instructing and they're doing the same jobs as the guys with 300 hours, the instructor rating is a waste of time unless thats what you want to do and it doesnt make moving into the twins any easier.

I've just finished up working in the kimberley myself. Private message me if you need to know any more, i'd be happy to help

best of luck
