CPL Navigation exam and slight out of date charts...
Do you think it really matters to have last issues charts required for CPL navigation exam? Surely they wouldn't have changed any questions on the 23rd? My AIP is fully ammended and up to date...
I know the new charts and ERSA came into effect on the 23rd but I didn't buy them because I'm focusing on passing all my CPL exams at the moment before I commence flying training again, and I don't think I will be flying until next ERSA is issued.
Also I have an early exam slot so it isn't possible to buy them before the exam in the morning.
Regards,
M/E

Thats a good question I reckon.
I think you will be allright with the charts you have. Very Unlikely you will be caught out by one day. Can you view the amendments to the charts online and note them on your charts? If you are in Perth I doubt Ma and Pa are going to notice...
The interesting parts of the question are
How many (significant) changes are made from edition to edition?
Can you just note the changes made to the last chart from the list of amendments in the new chart?
Will CASA questions rely on some of the subtleties in amendments to charts?
I have my ATPL Nav and Law exams soon and I do not want to waste upwards of 300 clams on pubs of no other use to me.

you can bet your arse that if you get 68% it's due to a slight change in ERSA or on a chart.
Roll the dice. But then again just don't cut it that close, get every other qu right
Good Luck

If your worried about it, just go into a pilot shop a few days before and buy the new charts. Better to spend $20 or so on some charts rather than $170 for re-doing the exam because the questions were on things that had changed.
When you live....
Never even opened my charts (other than WAC) in CPLNAV.
My ERSA was months out of date and I aced CPL air law with CARS/Act that was approx 10 years old.... (although I did print out and subsitute the bits that had changed massively)
Point being that unless you think you're cutting it really fine, CASA don't update the exams based on every data cycle and are only targeting small areas of all of the suite of documents and so the risk you're taking of getting one question wrong due to out-of-date documents is miniscule.
UTR
PS I don't subscribe to the same theory when flying - just ask the bloke who took off from a Melbourne satelite airfield late Sunday evening using the wrong CTAF because he hadn't checked his documents....

Hi UTR,
At least the ERSA in your posession is the latest version Hehehehehehe
Should that person have been on 128.0 and was actually on 126.7? I've been monitoring both and seems to have been quite a few not up to date!!
Hope you had a great w/e
Cheers

Not related to CPL Navigation but, some years ago when I was doing my IREX there was a question relating to an IAL chart that was no longer current; in fact the approach chart the question referred to had been recently converted from a circling approach only chart to runway aligned approach chart.
As you would appreciate having the latest chart in this exam was a disadvantage as it was impossible for me to answer the question! Thankfully, I still passed and was able to point out the error to ASL/CASA which I understand was subsequently corrected.
All this demonstrates is that the examination questions don't necessarily keep up with AIP/chart amendments but I think you are in a far more defensible position if you get a question wrong but have based your answer on the most current chart of AIP version.

Well after being to the asl testing site, and a few drinks at the pub... I passed with 75%, doh! I was confident of passing with about 90-100% after finishing before submitting.
Thanks for your help.
Luckily no more of my exams require charts

Did you finish early and go back and change any of your answers ?
That trap seems to get everybody - just got to resist temptation to use the spare time to revisit questions. Invariably you were right the first time!!

Not sure that's "invariably" the case FW! For CPL I was a died in the wool early finisher. Get through the Q's ASAP, do a quick stupid mistake check and hit submit.
For ATPL, I started taking my sweet time - still got through the first pass at speed but then went through the whole thing several times over and usually finding some errors. My ATPL average was substantially better as a result.
Back to the original Q - of the charts I bought specifically for CPL Nav, I used one in the exam and have never touched any of them since. Why the hell did they want to use the Hobart VTC??? Obviously somebody has to cop the shaft, but I reckon that a SY or ML chart would result the least number of people at the shop buying charts that are going to be useful for no more than 90 mins.
Having said that, I suppose that's the least of my concerns with the CASA/ASL exam system. Another day, another thread - WTS!
