5 Pax in a P68 new or old, no thanks. I bet the pax would prefer the baron, even an old one. There is very little leg room in the P68. Great trainer, ok for charter for 2-3 pax, or cargo if you dont have to get there fast.

Reality is there is not much to replace the PA31/C402 aircraft.

Have you considered looking in the states? There are lower time options over there.

If the clients have been brainwashed maybe they can be un brainwashed. I am sure Cessna can provide some great marketing info on the safety of the turbine Van.

You will need to do plenty of hours in the Van or any newish aircraft to meet those finance repayments. Another big reason the PA31/402's keep going and going and going......

Forget single engine for anything other than RPT as no resource company government agency or the RFDS (hippocrites that they are) will touch it, mainly as their insurance stipulates twins only.

New light jets could be a possibility however I think the insurance training requirements for them will destroy any chance of them coming to Australia. You would also have alot of trouble finding pilots with the minimum requirements to fly them given that these people want 1000's of hours with 500 ME command to fly a piston twin!!

Pity that Piper didn't pump out a few more of these babies!!

SkySista, the hours on most of those C441s kicking around at PH are around the same as Riding the Goat's PA31s and C310s.

Neville mentioned the T-1040. There is also the T-1020 piston suited for commuter airline work (supposedly "better built"?!) How about the PA-31T "Cheyenne" (PT6 like the T-1040) or the later development PA-42 "Cheyenne"? Garrets are cheap to run, if fecking loud...

Riding the Goat,

I test flew the new P68C at Essendon earlier this year and was suitably impressed after having flown and worked with the B model previously. A lot of the B model problems seem to have been addressed. It has a much better TAS (I got 155 without trying too hard for max cruise speed). PM me if you want my review notes on it. I was reviewing it with the view of coastal PNG ops with the hope that the SMA diesel turbo was just around the corner but it is still a bit of a ways off yet. Direct Air also seem to be very happy with their investment in the new model and may be able to give you some operational feedback. I don't think the internal space is too much of a problem - reasonably adequate unless you are into moving huge blokes around all the time. The executive interior with leather seats would look good for business.

Wasn't too impressed by the Viator as it isn't able to carry as much as a SET yet is more expensive however it is probably worth a look if it has to be a turbine twin. From memory you won't get any change out of two million for it...

A few years ago I took a Chieftain over to Gippsland Aviation for a spar mod and had a conversation with a person there about the aging GA Twins.
I queried if Gippsland Aviation had ever considered building a replacement for the PA-31/C402 class of aircraft and was surprised to learn that they had done a study into just such a task but had found that the eventual cost of such an aircraft would make them prohibitally expensive to purchase; well over AUD $1 million.
And that was as far as the study went as I remember.
