I completed a CPL there. Despite a good proportion of Sydney pilots generally writing the school off (just look at previous posts and the response you'll probably get here), I had a great experience there, both with ground and flying training. During my time there, the instructor numbers were very stable but since then, a few have moved on to bigger and better things and of course there's a few newies coming through.
I had a great instructor, and got all the support I needed from the school, so as a student I was happy. You might get a different response from an employee but I thought it was fine

The limited training I did there was average at best. Despite the position I was in at the time, the instructor I had was quite unrealistic about the training. I obviously got through in the end, but it left a sour taste in my mouth. I had the distinct feeling all the way through that the instructor I had looked down on me as if to say they were better even though my experience level was on par.

The director, SD, is an idiot. Also treats staff (read: instructors) poorly.

However some of the students have said its good, probably indicative of the individual instructors rather than the organisation.

Agreed!

The last three posters have it spot on.

Avoid like the plague, even if it is only for how the staff (ie instructors) are treated. That speaks volumes about the operation as a whole.

If your writing off Aerospace don't even think about going to Basair...

I flew to Canberra (YSCB) last thursday and got pulled up by security wondering if I had an aircraft in the list he had of aircraft with unpaid airport fees - mostly landing etc. Basair had about $600 of racked up unpaid. Don't charter an aircraft or you could get yourself in some trouble.

Isn't it funny how some of these schools now market themselves as "aviation college's". Funny what marketing does to
improve an organisation.

From what I hear about both, best to aviod if you are thinking about being a commercial pilot.

If only they spent a portion of the money they do on advertising to looking after the staff more then the place may improve.

Aussie Pilot

Not sure why you want to go south, but despite the comments, SD and Aerospace are on a par with most of the others at YSBK.

If you're in Brisbane, FTA at Archerfield, or if you're northside and don't mind a drive, Lester (SCAC) at Caloundra. Otherwise, head north to Bob Harris at Innisfail.

FTA specialise in Flt Instructor Ratings and produce a good standard using very experienced and senior instructors.

Further North, Lester and Bob, both can train you, one on one, and give you the benefit of their years of experience.

Bob Harris was partners with Bob Tait up that way years ago before Tait'y branched out into his own specialised area.
You can be sure you will get great training, but it is further away than Bankstown from Brisbane.

Have never seen BH criticised on these forums, nor are you likely to.

Avoid the sausage factories for the Flt Instructor rating, it is a very demanding task,
and you will need the right people to help you through the highs and lows.

Ditto to that - you could not go wrong with BH. Further away, but cheaper to live while you are there.

So there you go. The I's have it. In line with what disco air said, a happy student from this establishment probably relates to good experience with their instructor as opposed to the organisation as a whole, which is exactly the case with me.

My opinion of aerospace is just one of many, and if all the negative feedback has come from ex employees, then it's probably a good idea that you listened to them as opposed to what I've said.

It is a shame though that everyone who's been to this school will have to limit themselves to private ops from here on in. It hurts after all the time and effort we've put in.

Its like most airlines I guess, the company is making money and as a result they don't look at the way management runs the company. Money comes in student flies, goes home hopefully rebooks and happy days....

Not having seen the current intructor's at either establishment I can't comment on the expierience level of commercial/Charter/RPT they have. The issue im re-raising is CPL flying should be taught by experienced commercial pilots with thousands of hours in the above fields, not some grade 3 or grade 2 (however, this raises the issue about pay)

At the end of the day, it is your money and spend it how you feel fit

whether you are form india or from the land of Oz, it shouldn't matter where you are from when you choose a school.

The reason why Basair has a bad reputation might have something to do with recurances of gear-up landings, amongst other things.

Mav:

Havn't dealt with Basair directly but they are one of the few flight schools to have the guts/vision to invest in new aircraft.

HI,

It seems they are doing good now.

I asked one Indian student and one flying instructor of indian origin there about it. They said it's good, probably the best after GFS.

I like your comments on it.
