AWIB setup

Can anyone out there reccommend a method used to get an airport manager to set up an AWIB at a licenced aerodrome?

I have spoken to to them about getting it done, but they don't seem altogether interested, the BoM say it's up to the AD operator, and CASA aren't interested in giving them a nudge cause there's no requirement for it in the MAOS.

What can be done? At present, the only wxr info available (other than the TAF) is an AWIS accesible via phone and AUTOMET through AERIS and Flightwatch.

All suggestions gratefully received.

My understanding is that awip infomation is collected from sensors based at the ad so bom or casa wouldnt be that interested. probably the main reason your ad operator doesnt want to set one up would be cost. i guess there arent sufficient paying movements to justify it economically. Perhaps the cost could be recovered by advertising on the recoded message. I can just see it now:

"...QNH 1025. This AWIB is brought to you by BP air. phone +61 bla bla bla."

The place already has an AWIS, so the sensing and recording equipment is already there. All they'd need to do is get it hooked in to a radio transmitter.

Continental-520, why can't you just use the phone service?

… pretty much!
.
Our neck of the woods are in the final stage of installation and commissioning of a separate VHF ATIS installation (H24).
.
- During tower hours the VOR audio is the ATIS also
.
- Outside tower hours, the VOR audio broadcasts the AWIS! … nice to have particularly where the kero burners fly … sometimes late … CTAF … and poor weather … the ol’ shaded ILS minima …accurate surface wind and QNH cause that info makes that golden 100ft ‘minimum’ difference …. That’s important round here
.
In our case we initiated the works to resolve GA not being able to read the ATIS (required dictation) and for IFR Outside tower hours!! … I mean, who could say no to that modest investment given the safety benefits … less chance of people using the wrong runway for the conditions is just one of them!
.
… to be honest, I cannot see why there should be an impediment to AWIS broadcast over NDB at CTAF aerodromes!!
.
.. do you have RPT and/or Charter??
.
.. have you spoken to DoTaRS or the Govmit reference fed ownership and/or funding of the transmitter facility??
.
.. have you asked what the CASR’s say with regard WX broadcast?? (threshold requirements etc) if there are none .. one could be forgiven for pondering why not … particularly given the safety enhancement to aircraft at uncontrolled aerodromes this type of safety equipment brings .. ….. ewww I can hear the anguished howls from Canberra all the way out here!
.
Good luck!

Regards setting up an AWIB on VHF. I was previously involved in managing an airport that found this service of great value to its users i.e the pilots. The initial service was the same as what you say exists at your airport now - the telephone. Many positive comments were passed to me following the implementation of the AWIB. It also saved ground operators a lot of time in radio transmissions to their respective RPT crew.

The cost is obviously a factor, as previously mentioned in another reply. The BOM set the service up at the airport I was involved in at a cost of appproximately $7000, so if the traffic is high enough at the airport you are operating from, then it is very much worth the expenditure.

Unfortunately, though, too many pilots criticise the airports and the airport operators for not providing the things that they want and expect. Please though, try and convince the airport operators that this is a very valuable source of information. Good luck.

RAAF ATIS's double as AWIB when the tower is deactivated - as we get all the met instruments linked to the system and it's just a matter of putting dynamic fields into the ATIS (which won't need to be updated by a human).

So the cost of setting up a dedicated AWIS at any of the RAAF controlled aerodromes (incl. Darwin, Townsville and Newcastle) wouldn't be much at all. It would be a matter of getting a second ATIS system (which is a component of the ADATS system) with it's own frequency.

I'm not sure what sort of systems are available for AsA Towers - I wouldn't have thought it would be much different, but I could be wrong.

520,

Which airport ?
YBMA.

Continental-520, why can't you just use the phone service?
Um, because:

1. Use of mobile telephones in the air is considered illegal, Squire.
2. It's a really great look in front of pax when you take half your headset off and pull out the mobile to get the actual wxr. Really pro.

The place already has an AWIS, so the sensing and recording equipment is already there. All they'd need to do is get it hooked in to a radio transmitter.
Yes. Exactly. And this is what makes it all the more frustrating.

Outside tower hours, the VOR audio broadcasts the AWIS! … nice to have particularly where the kero burners fly … sometimes late … CTAF … and poor weather … the ol’ shaded ILS minima …accurate surface wind and QNH cause that info makes that golden 100ft ‘minimum’ difference …. That’s important round here
This is what I've suggested for YBMA as it would be ideal. The VOR/DME App. here also has the 100' lower minima where accurate QNH is available, but of course, ... it's not! I'll have a talk to DoTaRS though, anything's worth a try.

Cheers

Cont-520
I noticed YBMA is having the VOR replaced (see YBMA notam) ... get the aerodrome owner and AsA togther quick smart while the tech's are there ... you might get the AWIS audio piggy-backed on the VOR project ... work quickly ... not sure if they will play .. will help if you have a letter from the Local Member and the aerodrome operators in support .... might be worth canvassing the other operators particularly RPT and Charter!! ... ya with me

1. I know it's against airline policy, but is it actually illegal?
2. What's more important, getting your minima lowered so you can get your passengers to their destination, or looking like a pro?
3. If you have no luck with the airport manager you could try and get your boss to install a satphone in the aircraft.

try and get your boss to install a satphone in the aircraft
Oh, is that what everyone should do. Okay. Crisis over, forget I ever asked the question! Aerocat has solved it in a jiffy.

Thanks to the others for the constructive input. Please keep it coming!!

Had a chat to a bloke in Birdsville from AsA Projects and he said its not AsA, its the airport manager, and to have AWIB come over a navaid, it has to have the power bumped up, which costs mo' money, plus the setup costs.

I got the same story from the Knx Airport Manager.

How is the isa, 520? Its cold here.

tsk, tsk...

Hey disco

Yeah things are rolling along nicely here. Except we can't get any actual wxr info on VHF...!!

Surprising in a sense, this is one location I would've thought would have such a facility, since numerous less busy ad's have it..

Now which one of the 15 immediately available aircraft (from C182 to Kingair) would you like it put in Aero or would you like them in all of them? Would the couple of company hand held sats be enough for you like they are for the rest of the guys and gals?

Hey Gringo, next thing you'll be wanting some actual weather to report on that awib....

Morno. Yeah last time old disco was here there was some tree flowering around the district that was most decidedly "ponging" something cronic. Thank gawd its gone now... anyway, me hears disco getting all cozy down dere in da 'Gudda....

Yep, all of them. Or just one, then employ a guy to orbit over the aerodrome with the ear piece of the phone up against his mic, rebroadcasting the AWIB for all to hear.

Really? Where is this RULE written? It may be against airline policy but I do not believe it is illegal. It is illegal to not follow the directions of the flight crew, which can make it illegal. ATC publish telephone numbers for the TCUs in ERSA in the case of coms failure.
