CASA Eyesight requirements

Hi there,

I am a CPL holder, just passed the CASA Class 1 medical about 2 months ago. I founf out today after a visit to an Optometrist that I am a bit shortsighted ( my distance vision has deteriorated). I was wondering if anyone knew what the minimum eyesight requirements were for the Class 1 Medical? I tried calling the casa office, but they werent too helpful. What i'm trying to find out is if I'm now going to have cease flying. If it helps, the eye doctor told me that my eyesight is as follows - Right eye 6/12 Unaided, Left Eye 6/12- Unaided, both eyes 6/6 with glasses. Also, if i am allowed to fly with this prescription, wat are the rules regarding Glasses and Contact lenses? Does CASA have a preference?

There shouldn't be a problem if your eyes can be corrected with spectacles. Last time I heard you'd need to carry an extra pair of glasses with you in the cockpit.

Did you read the eye chart during your last medical? Has your eye sight deteriorated that much in 2 months?
What prompted you to visit the optometrist?

Piper2006,

You have absulutely nothing to worry about, I wear glasses/contacts that are -7.5 diopetres in each eye, thats way way past 6/90. Without my contacts I wouldn't find the chart on the wall.....period, let alone read the bottom line. With glasses, contact lenses I have 6/6 vision and that's they care about. So I pass the Class 1 no probs.

Contact lenses are better for flying I have found, than glasses. If you wear lenses, try to go for the ones that they say you can leave in for 30 days (they breath much better than the older style lense) which stops your cornea becoming hypoxic when you wear them for 12 hrs +......the cornea being a unique organ in that it recieves its oxygen directly from the air, not the blood supply.

CAVEAT...........although the manufactures claim that you can leave their lenses in for 30 days continuously........NEVER NEVER NEVER......do this. Possible problems being infection, leading to corneal ulsers.........possible loss of the sight in that eye. Its ok to sleep in them overnight occasionally if you have to, just take them out for half an hr to give them a good rinse in the morning.

Hi,

CaptFahom - I did read the eye chart at my medical exam, and i think i got 2 letters wrong, but the doc said this was ok. My eyesight hasnt deteriorated rapidly in the last 2 months, its been like this for a while. I got my CPL a couple of years ago, but I havent been able to continue with training until now, and thats why I thought it would be best to have my eyes tested properly first, before continuing with any training.


Thanks to all you guys for the quick replies, as you can imagine, this has got me a little stressed! I'll give CASA a call tomorrow and see wat the go is.

Before you ring CASA can you send in this new eye chart from my Doc.

At 1m.
THIS WILL COST YOU $130 DOLLARS PLUS THE DOCTORS FEE.

At 10m.

At 20m.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH

Pilot medical before last, my right eye only just passed uncorrected. I was warned by the DAME that for next time, have a prescription pair of lenses just in case I cant pass uncorrected.

Following (last) pilot medical I did better than the previous one. Didnt need the glasses i went and got. Go figure.

Then for a recent (non flying job) medical exam, the eyes were bad again, i struggled to get through. Apparently vision fluctuates (more noticeably in those who have marginal visual acuity) with various factors eg. fatigue, health, oxygen level, wearing corrective lenses beforehand etc.

When companies are hiring pilots, do that get picky about medical factors or do they just look at the class 1 medical and not ask any questions? In other words, would pilots get knocked back for medical reasons even if they held a class one medical?

Hoopdreams,
that is largely dependant upon the individual company. Some require their own medical standard, which may be more stringent than the Class 1, where others only require a Class 1 with, or without conditions.
