Essendon Airport Closure?
Hi all,
Heard recently that essendon airport will be closing down in 3 years.
Apparently, according to someone i spoke to this is old news, so if it has already been written about on here...sorry.
If not, can anyone cofirm whether or not this is true?

Much as the tree huggers and developers would like it to close, part of the airport (50 year?) lease from the Feds, requires it to remain an operating airport.
Also, ISTR that 70% of the site and buildings, including RW35/17, are heritage listed

Why is it that we get one of these threads every couple of months?
I learned to fly there 23 years ago and in another 23 years people will still be learning to fly there. Most Melbournians don't give a about Essendon airport, the only people who keep bringing it up are people with something to gain, namely the residents with property on the airport boundary and the property developers.
Now go away and stop bothering us.
LONG LIVE ESSENDON AIRPORT!!

Howard Hughes,
Just for the record, I am a pilot who flies in and around the melbourne area, visiting essendon regularly.
I am not a tree-hugger or developer, just concered when i heard this (now obviously false) information....appologies if i have offended.

ani tayas, Check out "Essendon Fields" for an idea what the aerodrome will be developed into. There is a conflicting bit of development near the threshold of 17. Generally, it could be a good thing.

Ozbusdriver,
Checked out the site for essendon fields.
Some of the future 'precincts' seem awfully close to the runways.....but this could just be the way the site depicts it.
It almost looks like we'll have to take off between office buildings!?!
