"000" hangin up on ya
Ok...this is not a wind up
I had about 30 plus people rocking up in my street at about 3 in the morning making a **** load of noise and throwing things everywhere....metal starpickets including
Being a law abiding countrymen...I rang "000"
Her : You've called ooo, would you like Ambulance, Police orFire
Me : I have an emergency in my suburb....police please
Her : What city and State
Me : Darwin
Her : What state Sir
Me : Last I checked Darwin was in NT
"For Ferks sake when you are in a rush.......you need them to know a bit more aey"
After a whole 27 minutes later and a three phone calls later the cops turned up...
I don't blame the cops at all.... am sure they were busy chasing people !!
Through the process, the lady second time HUNG UP ON ME .......YES she did.......before saying we are doing our best

Me believe now....it's better to ring your mates or even better if you the direct number for the cops........

When you call 000 it gets directed to Telstra in Melbourne, and they are the ones that 'send' the call to the correct place, all in all in OZ there are probably nearly 100 emergency 000 call centres throughout the country. In my observations(in answering 000 calls) Telstra stuff up this 'allocation' of the phone calls and put them through to the incorrect location all the time!

They ask the state as a matter of course after someone rang 000 stating someone was having a heart attack on the Mount Barker Golf course and the ambos turned up at the Mount Barker Golf Course in WA and not SA. That person subsequently died.
Yes, there is only one Darwin in Australia but the prompt is to ask for suburb and state regardless of how obvious it is.....

If your situation is anything like New Zealand's, you'll find that, apart from a bit of paperwork, the 000 staff are low-paid call centre reps some of whom often don't give a rat's arse.

If I may ..
Yes 000 is answered by a telstra operator BEFORE being put through to a police officer, or ambo or firey.
In the NT all three services are co-located at Berrimah in the Police Communications Centre.
In the greater Darwin area which includes areas almost as far south as Katherine, all police AND fire 000 telephones are manned by Police Officers. Ambo's do their own, (at least at the moment). All calls are recorded. Any unanswered calls (or overflow calls) automatically, after a few seconds will divert to other 24hr Police Stations (Katherine then Alice Springs) .. hence the requirement to announce where you're calling from, possibly more than once.
I'm guessing that this unahppy event happened at 3.00 am this morning?
All callers are asked to supply information that identifies the event, the location and any other info the operator thinks is pertinent to help determine how many officers are required to respond, whether other services may be required, this is then what determines the priority given to the event.
All jobs phoned in are prioritised. Each job, depending upon the information is allocated a specific code and also delivers if need be, the same job/info details to another service.
It could be, that whilst you may have wanted someone to attend there and then, it may not have been possible as all resources (police officers) may have been involved in a similar or even higher priority event at the same time.
It does happen, where all police officers on duty are called to a single event. Sad, but true.
If you like, you could PM with further details and I may be able to offer other advice.
You are within your rights to make a complaint re the operator, and with all calls recorded, and if per chance anything abusive happens to be recorded from either side, this will be factored into what action is/was taken.

Mate no disrespect, but I don't think that dialing 000, was the appropriate thing to do. Calling you local cops would have been the correct course of action.
Here in WA they are even running ad campaigns stating something along the lines of -
"if some yobbos start carrying on in your street, call 13...... and not 000"

Wasn't there some poor fool in Australia that had an emergency and dialled 911 - just like they do in the American TV show???
He then had the nerve to criticise the Australian system.
Hell, even young 3 and 4 year old kids have called the emergency services when family members have been injured/incapacitated.
As the old man used to say, you cant legislate against stupidity!

What we need is more lawyers to make Australia relaxed and comfortable - all on AWA's of course.
If you needed Police Assistance, you could of called 131444 instead.
That way, you get connected directly to the police, rather than
getting routed through Telstra.
I have found it works better than 000 at times.

sad indication of 'Americanisation' of Aussie kids...
apparently now the cops are startinga campaign to teach kids NOT to call '911' as they 'see on TV'.... because there are too many Yank shows on telly here....

Try being a dispacher and diciphering some of the addresses Telstra provides. Ive had to reroute calls back to NSW, and Vic on a few occasions. Then when every town has a railway hotel, or a "Tavern" it all adds challenges to the thankless job.
I sympathise with the residents having to put up with the noise factor, and I think 000 was prudent anyway. Star pickets wielded in the threatening manner to which many of the NT residents are witness to, occasionally ends up in the coroners court but more often than not we are called to take a suture job to the local hospital.
000 operators and dispatchers also have to dispatch to every call, including hoaxes. A few night shifts back, our ambulance was sent to 5 in 2 hours. All were lights and sirens response and we could not be diverted until the hoax was confirmed. The police have to put up with the same dodgy behaviour. The response time the good clean living folk get is stretched. Personally, I think its criminal behaviour.
Hey Voice, you dont miss us yet do you? We still have our own dispatchers. 1 for each 12 hour shift, then one for a few hours in the arvo... slight improvement on what it used to be. Still cant get to the dammed loo though!

I heard a clever little thing the other day ... and I think it should be pushed and made the norm for all mobile phone users, particularly kids and party animals.
ICE (In Case of Emergency punched in as the contact and the number to call .. ) take a lot of the guess work out of it whether it was needed by police/fireies/ambos
