Thanks MachTwelve.
Managed to track down the book - one of two on ebay. It arrived yesterday. Seems those must be the only two photos in existence. At least I've got some now.
Thanks again, Doug.

Liklik balus. Your post#3935
Bob Bates of Trans Niugini Tours, Mt.Hagen, flies his tourists from Hagen to Madang on an irregular basis in his PAC 750. You may be able to come to an arrangement with him to drop you off at Goroka on his way back to Hagen if he has a flight that fits in with you schedule. Trans Niugini Tours has it's own web site. Their Hagen number is 5421438.
John Cheung, of Island Air, Madang, could take you up in his C206 but that would be expensive.
Airlines PNG has daily Dash 8 flights POM-GKA-POM according to their October 2013 schedule.
If you want to get from Goroka to Hagen you could catch a PMV, (not recommended), or you may be able to hitch a ride on one of Doug Sharpe's trucks running regularly from Lae to Hagen. Doug runs Wagi (his spelling) Valley Transport Ltd. based in Hagen and their number is 5451333.
Hope this helps.

Hi guys. Trying to get details on this accident, in which TWO Robert Smiths' died.
I did see a report just after it happened, but it has been lost over the years.
Would DCA have investigated it? Why won't the accident show up on any air crash databases? Can't find it on the ATSB or any international sites. Would this be because it was a non-commercial flight? Thanks.
ps found a bit of info here; EX-KIAP NETWORK FORUM ? View topic - 1974 MacAir crash

HI dog
if you search this forum you will find a lot of info re the tragedy. It was very sad, I worked extensively on the search in the Sub RCC at Lae, in the Flight Service Unit and in a Hughs 500 with Athol Jory.
If only...
cheers

Smith lad showed me a new camera he was going to give try out
Then silence....big search.. Sypho got the prize for terryfying observers and squeezing 52 foot wingspan Porter through 30 foot gaps..(no really I was on one trip with him bloody amazing) Athol had something go bung with Hughes (fan belt broke?) think that was a mayday
Hope someone gets the story right someday but I believe Smith PIC was the chap they found in the Kunai days later

CARGO CULT
Standby Scum if you Google "Papua New Guinea Cargo Cult" there are a fair few articles on various Cargo Cults throughout the Pacific Islands including our old mate Yali from Madang.

Air Mel was jointly owned by Bob Paul and the French and operated in the Condominium of New Hebrides. Bob wanted to call it Air Condom but the French were offended! Bob had property and trading interests on the island of Tanna. Really great guy, later Chairman of Flight West.
Junior bought out Bob, maybe in the late 70's and eventually bought out the French, represented by UTA from memory.
Heli Tschuchnigg was sent to Vanuatu to manage the company and finally I think, Paula and Cox. I think Trader Booth may have also spent time managing Air Mel? As you would expect, Junior finally closed it down claiming it was going to be nationalised.
That National Geographic photo was taken in Vanuatu, not Papua New Guinea. The pilot looks vaguely familiar but I don't recall his name.

Does that article picture the BN2 as VH-EQV.? Surely not. I would expect it to be a 'file photo'
EQV was registered on 12.08.1970 and cancelled on 01.09.1970 on sale to Air Mel as VP-PAT...she was then cancelled to F-OCXC on 00.08.1974. (The French connection).

I think i remember that one. (I think...not because i am getting old, just i was 13 at the time and an air mel pilot let me sit up front on a BN2 - that's were i got hooked.)
Definitely Air Mel, Vanuatu, YJ-RV3 Circ. 1989, Fuel exhaustion after a flight from Tanna, only just made Efate, near white sands country club.
We watched it go past the front of our house on a truck a few days latter.
If i remember correctly the pilot at the time may have been one KB, no injuries, damage was a result of coconuts trees lying on the ground concealed in the grass.
