From today's National.

Who? what? where?

PNG for shuttle serviceSIMBERI Gold Mine in New Ireland province has struck at three-year deal with Airlines PNG for a 19-seater Beach 1900D to operate in both international and domestic routes.
The contract comes at a time the airliner was looking for additional contract not only in the country but throughout Asia-Pacific and the South Pacific region.
The miner signed the deal in which Airlines PNG will provide air transport service to its employees and freight, for both scheduled and non-scheduled charter services to the mine site on Tabar Islands east of New Ireland.
This operation will start on Monday.
In a statement, Airline PNG said the contract combined and centralised all Simberi’s aviation requirements under one roof.
Operationally and logistically, this was a sound decision and ensured less chance for delays in crew change and/or freight to and from the island, it said.
Allen Tyson, general manager for contracts and charter, said: “This is a landmark day not only for Airlines PNG but also for Simberi Mine.
“Securing this contract extends the airliner’s portfolio out to six major contracts within PNG and places it at the fore front of fixed-wing operators providing safe, consistent and reliable aviation services in support of the mining community within PNG,” he said.
Mr Tyson the airline operated an all-Bombadier de Havilland fleet of Dash 8.

A strange statement when announcing a Beechcraft 1900D charter!

RE: Sir James

Sharpie: it might now be appropriate to remove the personal contact details of Jim's widow from this site (post #2036). Posting this kind of information on an open forum - though it might be well meant - is not a good idea. It might also be appropriate to delete the sentence about the boys in post #2305 - that kind of talk helps no-one now. Just a friendly observation...

Gobi.

Thank you Gobi. Done.

As you can see, I was not the author but the messenger, but again no excuse for not proof reading and removing sensitive information.

Thank you for the prompt response -- you can't be too careful as to who is scraping info off forums like this.

Ray is trying to retire. At present he is a very good sim instructor for A/PNG. He has made a few cameo apperances in Morseby to help out A/PNG when they have been short of Check and training skippers.
He supposedly went Pinis early last year I think??? (my memory is not that good). They gave him the full spray with the Fire trucks (yeah they actually worked). But he was back about a month later.
Presently he lives on the North coast of NSW on his property.

Yep Ray is still around saw him in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago. The bugger is still as fit as a fiddle and enjoying life with a little less stress in the simulator dark zone.

Transair used to operate metros in PNG - but dont think their performance would be too crash hot out of Hagen/Goroka in the arvo. Can you take a metro into a dirt strip???

Thanks for the update on Ray Ross!

So when is the next Talair Reunion or I suppose we could widen the net and call it a PNG GA Pilots Reunion?

High 6

Better contact Bill Moore as I thought he had 2010 set in the sights for the next PX 'Do". As so many ex Talair guys continued on to PX careers, a combined reunion could be easily done!

Next Reunion

True Talk! Another combined reunion would be good but we may need a bigger venue. The last two gatherings filled the Caloundra venue to capacity as separate functions. Maybe an old aircraft hangar somewhere, reminiscent of Dero Club Mark II.

Capt Moore... you have control!

How long can they operate in PNG for before they must go on the P2 register?

Good question but you must tell us how much is being paid and to whom. Only then can we give you a fair estimate (of what is good value!)

After all, how many years did Russian registered helicopters operate in PNG? Must have been at least 30 years?
