Are there any accounts of Sid Marshall's pre-war adventures in PNG?
James Sinclair briefly mentions him in 'Wings of Gold' and he was a contemporary of 'battling' Ray Parer..

Back to the Nomad. That was a PNGDF Nomad which the lads, while attempting a STOL landing, overcooked it a bit during training. Nadzab in those years was just used for training as Lae was still open for Ops. The markings were mainly towards the rear of the A/C and on the tail fin, which unfortunately none of your pictures captured.
The closure of Lae in 1987 forced the commercial operators to Nadzab whilst the PNGDF were moved out temporarily as a plan to move the Squadron to POM was in the pipeline for early 90's, eventually moving in 1992.
PNGDF did lose a Nomad near the PNG/Indon border not far from Green River on the 4th of May 1981 with the loss of two national pilots.
The other PNGDF crash in Nadzab was in November 1987 when a formation of a Nomad, Arava and DC-3 took off for a flypast at Igam barracks for the Handover/Takeover parade to the first National CO of ATS. The DC-3 lost an engine on T/O and the crew allegedly shutdown the wrong engine and ended up in the kunai grass off R/W 09.
Needless to say, the CO's first official duty in office was to ground the crew and order an investigation...and he didn't get his flypast.

I knew Terry pretty well.
A good bloke.
Made a new trim tab for his Anson, on our flats lounge room floor, back around 1973.

It seems you're in contact with Jack McDonald.
He's probably one of the last who was closely linked with Terry.
The other person who knew him well is Barry Bell.
I reckon both could provide info you require for Rag & Tube.
Maybe of interest to you, on 19th May 73 Bev and I flew Barry's DH82a, SSI, Mangalore - Benalla - Wodonga (Joe Drage's strip) and partook in a meeting that afternoon, along with a small group, which resulted in the establishment of the Antique Aeroplane Association.
Due to incorrect info being forwarded to DOT a full SAR was launched that resulted in my ATPL being pulled by Vic/Tas region.
I was signing on for a tour next Monday when I found a letter in my pigeonhole from Ken McEntee cancelling my licence.
That caused a stir in Ansett while they found another to take my flight.
At that time Bev was running the College of Knowledge in Melbourne and the adjacent offices on her floor housed lawyers.
It didn't take long with them to sort out my situation and, along with my appointed solicitor, I met with two DOT officious - Ken McEntee and his superior, Fred Fox about 1000hrs.
While neither could justify the action taken against me they refused to
re-instate my licence.
By midday my solicitor had served those individuals with personal writs which claimed $7.2m in damages. (That was the lawyers assessment of my loss of future earnings).

Someone suggested a thread where ex PNG geriatrics lapuns could live in the dim distant past.
Where ever ex PNG staff post in Dunnunda, the thread seems to get hijacked with ever more incredible and unbelievable stories, so a dedicated thread sounds like a good idea.
So, grab your SP Brownie and go for it...........

This thread has been an unbelievable flight through the history of aviation in PNG.
Several things;
1)Talair loss of ISG with Andy Parr on Hindeburg Wall or Mt Musaka?

Knew Andy and his family well. Was present at his cremation. His dad Ken passed away last years. Mum and sisters Leanda and Margot still with us.
Can anyone provide details of what happened, the search, recovery, the location. Is the location accessible to hump in with mates and have a few SP's in his memory.
2)have travelled 6 times to BNE to PNG,Kokoda, Kavieng,Hoskings. Not once has the domestic connection connected. Have been put up at Holiday Inn, Ela Beach, Grand Papua every time compliments of Pixie. Some of them with 15 in our group. Financially that's unsustainable.
3)last F100 into Hoskings Aussie pilot gave great commentary of hills mountains volcanoes and the sad demise and deforestation for Palm oil.
4)lastly like saying thanks to adigger on Anzac Day, thanks to the past and present who opened up PNG for us to enjoy (Tank u tru).

Andy Parr's crash site was visible clearly back in 1984. I flew over it at least a few times although it was not on any regular route to anywhere. It was only visible on those rare days when the weather was extremely good on the hills north of Tabubil. The terrain rises so quickly there no one would normally want to be there. How can anyone categorically say what happened. Another sad loss in PNG aviation. Trekking in there would be impossible.

Whiskey Delta Lima, thank you for taking the time to post those pictures.
I have very similar photos of most of those places and memories of another generation of pilots, as I spent a couple of years flying the Morobe, Oro, Gulf and Central provinces 30 years later in the 90's. Hard to believe it is already 20 years ago as I am sure you find it hard to believe half a century has passed by since these were taken.
