How much do you pay for your medical?

A couple of months back I had my medical and it cost me $205 including a cardiogram ($70). My previous DAME has unfortunately retired and only used to charge $90 including a cardiogram. What does anybody else pay?

My employer covers it as we have DAME's on staff.

Your cardiogram is the bit that pushed the price up. A normal medical should be $90.00 plus the consult fees the quack figures is fare.

It's not too common for a GP to have an ultrasound machine and the qual's to evaluate the results... ECG's however should be free of charge as I could even give you one if we're above the transit layer. I couldn't tell you much of the squiggelly lines that come out of it though.

the only benifit of an exe medical is that it is tax deductable.

I would just ask the price when booking in, then your wallet won't feel wounded after the cough test.

Cheers

The last Class 1 medical I paid for cost me 17c per second.

$88 for just over 8 minutes in his room (I timed it!).

That bloke in Cairns, forget his name, but if you walk in upright, you;ll be right.

Down here charge is $70, a bit less for staff pilots. Takes about 20-30mins. No extra charge for ECG.

$80 including ECG, bloods and audio in Kununurra.... $120 in Darwin including ECG... $200 in Tennant Creek for a basic medical not including the ECG...

Leatherdog "ultrasound machine" ???

Many GP clinics have 12 lead ECG units now and are capable of interpreting the results. The printout has a result printed on it! I just hate the sticky stuff left behind from the gel tabs.

The trouble is the DAME appears to be becoming an endangered species. It can take weeks to be able to get an appointment in some places. I must say I ended up keeping my DAME as my GP. The medicals go alot faster now.

Don't you hate it when your heart rate is below 50 and the ECG comes out "abnormal".

Doc gets you to jiggle around a bit and think of something exciting to get it above 50, thus read "normal" to send off to CASA!

Looking at the Tax Invoice right now. Here's the breakdown...

Av Medical Renewal: $135
ECG: $47
Audio: $25

Plus pathology for blood lipids: $74.20

Plus GST!!

Grand Total: $301.90

And that was in Brisbane! (I think I'll be seeing someone else next time).

To have a chardiogram is to have an ultrasound machine monitor and record your hearts function. It looks for holes' in the heart in babies and children.

As for grown ups, It will confirm or dismiss the results of an 12 lead ECG that indicates an abnormal rythum.

If a chardiogram is required you are possibly in a bit of trouble as the results need to be intrupreted by a chardiologist, or you should maybe look for a new GP who can read ECG's

Ah I wondered where you were going with the ultrasound thing... and you're correct in one use, but many surgerys do have ultrasound equipment. The Ultrasonographer interprets the ultrasound recording (something like a video) and sends their report to the requesting physician.

cardiology, electrocardiograph interpretation (is an ECG), cardiac ultrasonography (echocardiography) are all very different sciences... Ive seen a few printouts of ECG's that will have 10 different interpretations after being assessed by 10 different practioners. Thats the beauty of diagnostic programming. There are a few key giveaways that make gross diagnosis very easy though.

I will cut this entry short before I become pedantic with the terminology and the spelling....

When I was still in the army. The RAAF at Pearce did mine upon payment of one good size chocolate cake for the med flight staff. Ahh the good old days when we could get away with a shonky or two.

Last class one was about $140.00 in Perth incl ECG.

Compressor Stall, with a heart rate less than 50 you are ridiculously fit, and should have to drink more beer and eat meat pies until it comes up to a more normal reading!

Did mine last week - $125

Interesting to note, they no longer ask how much booze you drink and how often. Is it now just a given that we are all pi$$ heads?

Maybe they figured that pi$$heads just say half of what they do drink anyway, who knows!

Friggen good value that one RWS. Mine was $130, Class 1, ECG, Audio and Blood lipids as well, since I'm now an old fart apparently. I figured it is cheap really, and my DAME is my GP as well.

Arm Out The Window,

Attempts to do that have gone all pear shaped. She who must be obeyed started me on low fat cheese and milks about a year ago. Had a cheese toastie today with full fat cheese and felt oily and sick afterwards.

Guess it's my fault for not doing the grocery shopping!

She does not stop me on the beer though!
