Hello Annie,

I still have a few years till I start and learn to fly. Although I'm no professional in aviation, I still reckon boys AND girls have the rights to do anything. Why can't a girl like aviation? They're humans too! Aviation is opened to anybody. Don't be nervous about posting this I'm a boy but I seriously don't like it when people say "Man-Made", why not say "HUMAN-made". Girls are just the same as us boys.

Don't let your sex put you down in aviation, as others have said the sky needs more females! Go for it and never give up! I hope this has been an encouragement to you Although I'm not adult or professional in aviation but just a high school student I hope this has helped you a bit

Stay with your dream

Kind Regards,

Capt. J(r)

...but just remember Annie, it is a boys club a brotherhood and you will have to put up with lots of sexist crud!

But you wouldn't want it any other way I suspect.

Now listen up sweet hart do I have some advice for you that is going to make your transition from mummy and daddy’s mansion in Mosman into the big wide world of Aviation a whole lot easier

1. Learn to enjoy a nice cold beer or more importantly learn where to buy beer by the case because you will be buying a lot of it in aviation
2. DON’T CRY. Learn to control your female emotions I know it might be hard when your boss is bullocking you for denting his newly refurbished aircraft.
3. Don’t shag other pilots with your own company it only creates problems on Monday morning when the guys are cheering the lucky lad who nailed you. Its not worth it and it gets you nowhere
4. Some bosses will employ you only because your female and he his trying to get into your pants. Stay away from companies like this.
5. Finally don’t think that because you’re a female you will get an easier ride to the top than your male counterparts. Remember this industry owes you nothing extra because you’re a chick
6. Despite this If flying is your dream go for it only you can make things happen and only you can make it fail good luck

First from Jerricho (in an ATC Issues thread) and now from Blastoid.

Yeah sure my degree from UQ is only in Human Movement Studies (Phys. Ed.) but even us jocks know some big words and know how to use the dictionary.

BTW, Go splannie, in the words of Worf..."seize the day!"

Go for it gal,

Had the pleasure if working with one of the armys best pilots, she put many a bigot in their place just by her sheer professionalism(sp) and had one of the best senses of humor i have ever had the pleasure of being on the other end of.

live the dream

Splannie; I endorse most of the previous comments. Chuckles, with whom I was privileged to have had more than a few drinks at the old Club Dero in PNG another lifetime ago said it best.
And vh-oja also had very good and sound advice. Get all the theory out of the way as soon as possible.
All the best. Go for it and don't take crap from anyone!

Go for it Annie!!!!

As a pilot, if you conduct youself in a professional manner you'll have no problem earning the respect of your colleagues.

Those people who've said it's a bit of a boys club are absolutely right. But we (girls) wouldn't want it any other way, you'll have a great time winding them up!! Plus they're always surprised when, at the end of the day you turn up at the pub all 'girlie'!!

My advice is go for it. nothing can compare with the thrill of flying especially when your instructor hops out of the a/c for the first time and you realise its up to YOU to get it up and down again safely. You only get one one shot at life so I believe that spending it sitting up the front of an a/c is a lot better than spending it sitting in a office at some law firm (pay notwithstanding!)

If your goal is the airlines have you looked at the possibility of a cadetship? Your a uni degree in law/science you would stand a better chance than most at getting in the advantage being a job at the end after a couple a years with a regional.

With all respect to Splannie, I wonder if "A young male in aviation" would have got this many views and replies?

There's my advice to you splannie. Just watch those who're willing to give you so much help, as, like a lot of people, they're looking for something in return.

DirectAnywhere! PCFlyer! I'm Shocked!!!

Are you trying to suggest aviation is full of sexist, masoginistic opportunists who only think women are useful for one thing???

96% maybe....

Annie, there are no bars to a female filling ANY role in Aviation as long as you realise it IS male dominated with all that implies. I've flown with many female FOs (Though I never had the pleasure of flying as FO for a female captain) and they have always been proffestional, competant and a pleasure to work with. They have all also had stories of having to deal with intrenched male attitudes at one time or another.

Be prepared to be resiliant, but appart from that, go for it!

You are studying law and science you say??

If I had to do it all over again this is what i would do.

Finish your studies, then get out in the real world and get a job in the law field.
Meanwhile, go to flight school get your PPL and build a few hours.
If you still LOVE flying after that continue your ratings and maybe find a part time flight instruction job to gain more experience while KEEPING your law job. Your law job WILL be much higher paying. If you think aviation is for you after that, well great quite your job and get a job at a regional.

Ask your self some questions first.
1) Do you enjoy being away from home 6+ months of the year.
2) Do you enjoy packing your overnight bag, living out of a suitecase, sleeping in hotel beds.
3) Do you enjoy the sound of an alarm clock at 4am to show at the airport at 5 for a 6 o'clock departure.
4) the list could go on!!!

This is not a 9-5 job.

my 2 cents

Yeah OK...bit like the teacher (female) who told my then 8 yr old she couldn't be a pilot because she was a girl....now my girl (now 15) has virtually sero interest in aeroplanes...when we go somewhere in our Bonanza she sits in the back with a discman and says "are we there yet?"...but

I've encourages many male pilots and given much advice (mosrtly erwasonable I hope) to male piloys and I'll be f***ed if I wont do the same for female ones...

sory about the red wine indiced speeling.

Chuck.

Editted for the F word...figured it would get picked up by the PC police software but it wasn't

Chuckles; Somewhat curious as to what Red you've been drinking that would cause you to misspell so badly.
Just got back from the local Chinese eatery having demolished a good meal with a bottle of Rawsons Retreat and have no problems with the English language at present anyway.
Care to elucidate??

Well we know what happened to the last airline that took a certain dislike in female pilots.

It was Ansett and yep she went belly up alright. Before the aussies get going, its the mentality like that created the systemic problems of Ansett. New Zealand was handed a terminally ill patient to deal with , and we had to pay thier debts too.

Sorry if i offend anyone, but in summary its probably a tough enough industy as it is without the time out youll probably want for maternity leave.
