Pocket PC's - iPAQs and the like......
Just curious about how many people use Pocket PC's (I guess more so than Palm Pilots).
There are a few new ones on the market which appear to have a small form factor and good features such as some of the smaller ipaq's, and I would like to know-
/ How practical you find them for notes (airport notes etc)
/ How user friendly in a/c
/ Can you use them for getting Wx and Notams via mobile phone /modem (bluetooth or wifi for example) or sync with desktop
/ Do you use them for GPS - moving map (either for aviation or city maps)
/ What specific aviation apps can you recommend (ie Nav computers, flight planners logbooks, Atlas...)
/ Do you need a lot of inbuilt memory or will SD/CF cards be sufficient
...and anything else.....

I won an Ipaq H3950 and i thought it could replace my Palm Vx, loads better and some great features but i could not get it to sync with GroupWise 6 so i have now sold it and am back to the Palm.... Suits my needs anyway?

Flying Pocket PCs

I use my HP Jornada 545 all the time for flying, particularly at the flight planning stage. I don't use PocketPC in a active role whilst actually flying eg GPS flight tracking as I find it pretty hard to read in bright conditions. But I wouldn't fly anywhere without it.
A program that I can highly recommend is FlightCalc which is produced by a Canadian firm called Skymark Technologies (www.skymarktechnologies.com). I've tried a number of other programs but this one really works for me as it can do all flight planning calculations, graphical presentation of W&B etc.
There are many pilot and flight training applications available for both the PocketPC and PalmOS operating systems. The best way to find applications is to go to www.handango.com and go to the relevant OS section and then type either "aviation", "flight" or "pilot" in the search box. A list of applications will then appear which, in most cases, are available on a trial basis for 30 days.
Handango appears to be the better site for PocketPC applications while the Tucows website (www.tucows.com) appears to cater better for Palm PCs.

Bluey, I work for an I.T distributor and we have just brought some GPS products on board for use with Notebooks and PDA's. Arecommended program for palm is Palmefis, however I can happily answer any/all questions if you want to email a question.

Thanks for the replies all - just had a search through handango and there appear to be some interesting apps (e6b comps etc), i think they ofter a trial period so will give them a go - re GPS products - is there an all in one program that lets you load aviation maps and swap to city directories? I notice that some pdas can be used as a car moving map with street directions... I think HP also have a new bluetooth GPS which may be good as it will allow you to keep a SD card in the device for extra storage.

I am getting the new O2 XDA II in a couple of days and will mainly be using it as an organiser as well as putting a weight and balance and takeoff and landing calculator program I've done up myself on it for the times when using pen and paper isn't very practical.
I am looking at getting a Bluetooth GPS receiver in the not too distant future but it will initially be for position confirming on long trips and for navigational assistance in the car in unfamilar locations with lack of maps. The good thing is you can get any type of map that you wish of any are and stick them on a data card and have it handy any time you find yourself without a clue of where you are.
However I am not too keen on the always on Internet function, especially as it is running MSN Messenger on it as well. Does anyone know how this feature can be disabled?? I plan on just shutting MSN Messenger down but the GPRS makes me worry about high phone bills.
Also can you use the email function on it to hook up with Yahoo Mail so that it instant alerts you to mail received??

The ratio amongst my colleagues is 4:1 palm to ppc!

I have a PocketPC, but I bought it in the days when Palm did not have its agreement to synchonise with Macs. I have a Mac desktop at home.
Still the PocketPC is also pretty good. It just means that I synchonise it with my work PC rather than my Mac at home.
