Talking Jobs In Oz

Looking to emigrate out and can get the work visa. With 3200hrs TT and 1000hrs Dash8 and 1000hrs EMB 145 Jet, what are my chances of finding work. Ideally Sydney or Melbourne.

Regards

As good as any. Remmember that the Australian Pilot is one of Australias largest exports compared to Livestock. So youll be fighting against the stream so to speak.
Best of Luck

To put it all in the scale of things, perhaps you should ask yourself what are my chances of not getting a job?!?

Seriously, your resumé sounds pretty promising though, good luck with it all.

Cheers,

Soulman.

A chap with 1000tt 500multi piston with the right contacts will beat you.

Robair's comment was sarcasm reflecting the sad state of the industry today. It will help you if you get used to that sense of humour should you decide to move here, or remember it if you are an expat. And boasting the fact that you fly a jet will again earn you few friends.

There are many pilots who are as or more qualified than you out of work. Many from Ansett, Kendall etc have either had to give up flying, move overseas, or head out bush to fly Cessna's, IF the company would take them. Like anywhere, things are cyclical. Virgin Blue are still hiring slowly, but QF have stopped. They are the companies that create the progression when they hire.

That does not mean that your search or quest will be futile, but it will be hard. (and remember, most pilots want to live in Syd or Mel, so it makes it harder!).

Good Luck

Pin Head, why Sydney or Melbourne? There's a lot more to Oz than the big smoke.

Not to flash as you don't have an Australian ATPL. Also, as someone else said, there are lots of Australians with more experience than that still out of work.

Pinhead,

You have to keep in mind that NO airline in australia will accept your application until you have 500 hours Multi Engine Command. (NOT ICUS!!). Till you have this, you can forget about any turbine/jet job in australia.

There is a provision in the Australian CAO's which states that you cannot be a captain of an RPT operation until you have 500 hours MEC. Thus no airline will employ you without it.

Mr Hat is correct. Contacts will be just as important as jet time. Nepotism is rife in australia.

The good news is that CASA (the aussie CAA), will accept your ATPL for transfer with a minimum of hassle, as well as any type ratings. The CASA website is very good and has a section on converting foreign licences.

Personally, if you really want to live out there (and I can understand, since I cry myself to sleep once a week thinking about it), then do it.

Go out there and work the CV's. If you dont have the 500 MEC, then it will be a problem, but given your time, and a bit of patience, you should be able to pick up a piston twin job. Once you have the 500 MEC, you will have no problem getting into a regional, or jet with VB/QF.

If you do, best of luck.

Wink Nepotism

bateman - Having worked in another professional industry, I felt the amount of cronyism and nepotism with regards to aircrew recruitment was staggering compared to other fields of endeavour! I assume it has a lot to do with the massive oversupply of Pilots, where in the scramble for employment and advancement the lowest common denominator comes into play. Anyone else who has come from other industies found this to be the case, or is it just me ?

That is only true for low capacity RPT (less than 38 seats), it is not applicable to charter or high capicity RPT (ie Qantas does not have that requirement).

A number of turbine charter operators have people get their commands with less than 500 MEC, let the pilots do their apprentships on the RHS, before transferring them to LHS providing they have the command hours for an ATPL.
