Converting EASA license to FAA to hour build whilst working over here

Hi everyone,

I'm Irish but I completed my ATPL's in Greece last year under the HCAA, with all that's going on however & not a chance of a job for a few years I reverted back to working on superyachts to save some more cash

I am now on a new boat based out of Florida & as I should be here for the next 2 years or so I want to fly while im here both to hour build & also to keep current.

How exactly do I go about this as iv had conflicting advice?

i have applied online to IACRA to verify my license but as I put ATP I'm told I have to redo this & select 'private' as you cant transfer a commercial license from CAA to FAA? is this correct, &if so then do I just hold a ppl over here? & cant for example start to fly for a small company doing small flights over to the Bahamas (for example)?

Any advice is greatly appreciated for any and all that have gone before me

Davy

Why would you put ATP if you don't have an ATPL?
You can 'convert' anything - PPL, CPL or ATPL to FAA as long as you meet the necessary requirements, take the written and flight tests. But if you want to get an FAA certificate without passing a flight test, you need a 61.75 certificate which is essentially a validation of your foreign licence. Also known as a piggyback or OTBO. Whatever level of licence you have, since 1997 they'll only issue you a PPL.

The good news is that you're working in the US, so presumably you have a green card or citizenship? In that case I'd recommend getting all your FAA certificate and maybe building time as flight instructor.

Im not sure if you misread my post but it says I completed my atpl in Greece last year...

My question is do I have to redo my license verification form and tick private if they are only going to issue me a ppl?

There are several issues here.

First of all, if you have a frozen ATPL or fATPL, you don’t have an ATPL. You have a commercial license with the ATPL theory completed.

Secondly, you will need to get familiar of the process to convert a license. The US and Europe have a reciprocal agreement. Knowledge tests and practical tests must be completed to convert the equivalent license. It goes both ways. Someone with an FAA certificate would need to complete the 14 ATPL exams plus the practical exams. EASA to FAA requires taking the equivalent exams.

There is an exception to this, and the FAA will allow you to get a private pilot certificate based on a foreign license under FAR 61.75, hence why you will have to resubmit your IACRA with private pilot. If you want a commercial certificate, you’ll need to pass the theory exam and practical test. If you have an unrestricted ATPL, you’ll need to also pass the ATP-CTP course before you can sit the ATP knowledge test.

Once you get the 61.75 certificate, you’ll need to pass a flight review with an instructor in order to fly. I recommend getting familiar with the FAR/AIM, and sections 61 and 91 specifically. It’ll save you a lot of grief.

As far as doing the verification all over again, you’ll have to contact the local FSDO. Also, the FSDO does not handle visa issues, aka they can’t tell you if you have legal status to work or not, the only can tell you from a regulatory side if you have the right certificate to work or not.

I hope that helps.

To the first reply in this thread, I’m not sure what status the OP has but I wouldn’t just assume that he has a green card or citizenship. My guess is a B1B2 visa but that’s for the OP to decide to share or not.

I kinda thought the same as when filling out the verification form I had to look up the fat regs for what the difference was and according to their site a commercial license is the full blown 'unfrozen' and atp is just someone like me with their atpl exams but below the 1500hours.

regardless however I won't be rushing to sit any more theory exams any time soon so am happy to redo my LOV form and change it to Private.

I will do as you say and when I get the verification then go to an instructor in order to pass a flight review, does my IR etc carry through with this?

thanks for the input, much appreciated.
