A question for United pilots

Do you guys and girls get to do observation flights before converting to a new type or before initial training?

Incase you do, do you get paid for these flights?

Thanks

You might have more luck in a more US-centric forum. Try these:

Not specific to UA but a friend just got hired at a US major. He has time off between indoc and can jumpseat to observe on his own time if he wants. He can also ride the jumpseat to and from training to observe. That is pretty standard.

I also believe new hires are required to do 2(??) observation legs. I think that is after initial equipment training is complete but I'm less certain of that. Those are the only mandatory observation trips that I'm aware of.

No, out of the schoolhouse then IOE, you can ride Jumpseat if you wish to observe on your own time but not required.

Coming legislation will require a minimum amount of observation time for new F/Os. See Table 1—Summary of Final Rule Provisions in the link below. I know of at least one US legacy carrier that was already requiring observation flights as part of syllabus for new hires but now it'll be required by law:

Texting a new hire right now. Four observation j/s rides at AA . Two mid training in sims between sim week 1 and sim week 2 of training and two j/s rides after training is complete but before IOE/LOE flying starts. That's what he thinks the timeline is.
