Delta Fleet Plans ?

120 MD80s gone in five years ? That seems ambitious. It wasn't all that long ago they were buying every MD90 they could find (65 currently in service)...and then those 90 (+1 "on order") B717s.

Not sure how that fits with the E190 order announced earlier (Currently 19 listed as "on order"):

Officially, no decision yet. Maybe in May ?:

"In a conference call with analysts, Jacobson said he would not discuss ongoing speculation in the media but hoped to update analysts in May on aircraft spending at Delta..."

Not that ambitious. AA's parking 63(?) S80's this year, 97 over two years. Five year draw down looks like it was 191 a/c.

Retiring 120 in 5 years is only 24 a year. That's about AA's 757/767 retirement pace.

misd-,

I'd guess if they park pretty big numbers of air frames in a short time, they have lift available to replace them...or will have shortly ? It's all about hauling butts.

It's a fun puzzle.

The md80s are old, suck a lot of gas, cost a lot to maintain. DAL pilot said mid-late 2020s to retire the md90s. Think they will buy more 717s/MD90s if they can.

(RTTNews.com) - Delta Air Lines
said Friday that it has reached an agreement with Airbus to acquire 37 additional A321s as part of its efforts to renew its narrowbody fleet. The fuel-efficient A321s will replace older-generation jets, including the MD-88. The 37 aircraft will be delivered concurrently with existing A321 orders through 2019.

These transactions are part of Delta's broader fleet strategy allowing the company to achieve its long-term financial targets, including 15 percent EPS growth and generation of $4-5 billion in free cash flow annually, while replacing 20 percent of its mainline narrowbody fleet over the next five years.

The agreement follows an announcement Thursday that Delta would become the U.S. launch customer for Bombardier's C-Series small narrowbody aircraft.
