FAA Medical Flight Test

Hi, Apologies if this has already been asked. I am a monocular pilot in the UK with a CAA Class 2 training for my PPL and trying to find a way of getting a commercial licence. The FAA have issued me with a Medical Certificate Class 1 for student purposes only. For it to become unrestricted I need to do a Medical Flight Test in the USA which will take time and money. Does anyone know if there is way of doing this in the UK? Presumably with an N reg aircraft and FAA endorsed FI.

I have taken them in the US and they are administered by the FAA. You can ask the CFI to contact the FSDO for advice, but the best they would do would be to delegate it to a DPE when you take a checkride.

The flights themselves are not an issue, make sure you are current, proficient (ie not rusty) and be prepared to fly normal procedures. I had to estimate distances to objects on the ground and spot traffic, all normal for safe operation.

The process is to make an appointment with the FSDO and have an aircraft available. The medical folks will then make their decision based upon his report. It can be done in a day with planning ahead.

Thanks Alex,

I have contacted EFT in Florida and waiting to hear back. Will need to take a few lessons to get some practice in. Am I right in thinking that to fly internationally an FAA endorsed commercial licence is preferred? Thinking ahead, if I am lucky enough to secure an FAA Class 1, this may not be possible with the CAA.

What is your eye situation? Feel fee to PM me if easier.

Thanks Neilki, I will be contacting them next week. Shame it requires a trip to the US but worth it if I manage to get a Class 1.

Monocular vision is easy to get certified at class 1, if the situation is static. FAA not acceptable to fly commercially in the EU for some reason, so you'd need to look at the conversion process, plenty of places in FL which can assist.

Hi there,

Just been reading your thread and I'm curious to know how you have done with your class 1 and flying in the EU or FAA in the US. I'm also a Monocular pilot. I hold a current class 1 medical in New Zealand and fly the 737NG. I'm trying to find out if the EU allows monocular pilots to hold a class 1.

Hi Alex, Have finally arranged FAA licence verification, DPE meeting and MFT and it all happens in Florida next week. Taken a long time to sort, so fingers crossed for a successful outcome.

What do you mean by a medical flight test? No such thing exists in the United States.
If you need an FAA medical examination, you just book it with a Airman Medical Examiner (AME). A class 1 FAA medical should cost approximately $100.

The official term is "Special Medical Test" which results in a "Statement of Demonstrated Ability."

Good luck to the OP. I used to fly with a one eyed pilot. His idea of a Halloween costume was beyond sick.

In my temporary state of poor reading comprehension I missed the monocular part of the discussion, and assumed that the discussion was part of a larger discussion on obtaining EASA - FAA conversions. I am aware of what a SODA is. Good luck to the OP!

Thanks everyone. I received some good news this week in the form of a FAA Class One and SODA. Next steps are to enrol on a CPL/ME program and work towards a frozen ATPL. Currently reviewing schools in the US. The problem I have will be to find work in the US. Does anyone know if the FAA Class One is transferrable to an EASA Class One? Any advice on help with funding is appreciated.
