SAN standby

Apologies if this is the wrong forum, but I thought I would get a better response here than in the PAX/SLF forum.

I am planning to travel from the UK to San Diego later this year and hope to travel standby. I am trying to decide which US airport to fly into in order to have the best chance of getting a connecting flight down to SAN. Based on the number of flights, I thought about ORD or LAX - assuming the more flights each day the more chance I have of getting on

Any thoughts of additional airports I could fly into - I have been to the airport's website so am familiar with the destinations, it is just I'm not sure how popular these routes will be..

Thanks for any help..

It doesn't really matter - I can get sby on most of them - majors would make most sense though CO/AA/UA/DL etc and affiliates

Standby on SWA requires a full fare ticket.

Yes I did consider it (and even asked that very question on Pprune prior to my last trip!) but it will be an evening drive - possibly on a Friday and the general consenus was that at that time of day it would be a bit of a nightmare.

A standby from LAX to SAN is around $35 so I am considering going into LAX as you say then just getting a flight down the road.

However, checking flight prices it might actually be only marginally more expensive to get a confirmed ticket and avoid the risk of sleeping in the terminal

All the best...

As a commuter who starts out in SAN, I would avoid the LAX-SAN leg other than in the AM. I've sat in LAX waiting for hours to get on a Brasilia to SAN.
The route is full of business types who buy tickets last minute as required by their business. The hourly flights are also so spaced together that pax from the later flights often leave on earlier ones. I thought I was going to get a number of times to see a gaggle of folks running to the gate wanting to know if they can make the earlier flight rather than the one they were booked on.
One possibility that might help is LAX-CRQ. Carlsbad is located in North San Diego County, along the shoreline. The loads are not as heavy, but is occasionally weight restricted as CRQ has one short runway.

It's really not that bad. 405 to 5 and get a rental car from 19$ last time I did it, most have free drop off of the cars too.
???Does anybody know anything about the train? Maybe that could be considered for this gentleman..

If time isn't a factor, then I would think it is an option. If its from about 10 am to 2 pm then it might be ok. Otherwise, you're hitting all or parts of LA, Orange county and San Diego traffic. I used to do the drive from LAX to my house till I couldn't take it anymore.
