You'll be hired on short haul. Progression to long haul is based on seniority, so depends on the bidding of your colleagues ahead of you on the seniority list. The future of pure long haul flying is uncertain, the company is in the process of introducing mixed fleet flying - short/long haul combined.

SAS is spending too much money on positioning LH-crews from Oslo to Copenhagen. Just a short delay on the positioning flight or the flight to US means that you will run out of duty time if flying to Chicago, and therefore a diversion to eg. New York is required. One of the things SAS had to fight over the years with the pilot unions, but now it is over.
Another thing, is that SAS can optimise the duty time. For a long haul pilot flying 900 block hours pr year, which is maximum only gives around 1200 duty hours, which is far from the maximum 1920 hours/year.

Also in regards to pay I’ve seen quotes ranging from 450 000 kr all the way up to 650 000 kr which is obviously quite the difference and would significantly impact the possibility of commuting from Trondheim to Oslo so just looking for a ballpark figure.
And is it true that you can only apply once ?

Not entirely correct. I was assessed twice, back around 1997-98. Failed the first one, possibly because I was particularly enthusiastic, and passed the second one, about a year later. However, the story was always like you said, only one shot. Just want to share the fact, that there are exemptions.. Fact.

Aren't they forced by law to delete everything after two years or so?

SAS CPH Widebody Position
Hi All,
Been keeping an eye on SAS through their transitioning out of bankruptcy and COVID, and just saw their post for MFF 330/320 FO position based in CPH. Can anyone elaborate on what this would look like? E.g. pay, roster, lifestyle, day to day operations, promotions time etc. Pretty much anything you’d like to know before joining the operation for the long run! Any rumours about future expansion/orders?
Thanks

SAS CPH Widebody Position
Don't expect it. Probably some muppet in HR put that out. Getting on the long haul fleet (actually mixed short- and long haul) is regulated by seniority. Entry position is short haul only.
SAS is not exactly known for neither pay or work life balance these days. Lower pay than main competitor Norwegian and most pilots are on a variable roster. Fixed roster is possible, in limited numbers, and assigned based on seniority. Time to ugrade is anyone's guess, but you had been way better off a few years ago because of the demographics. Many retirements going on at this time and for some time to come, but there are also many hundreds of young-ish people hired in the last 10 years. Expansion... I don't think so. Commuting is possible and crew try to accomodate commuters by offering the jumpseat, but you pay for the ID tickets yourself and it does require some careful planning at times. Great people to work with and flying can be interesting. You can bid for either one day trips or nights away from home.

Salary varies slightly between Sweden, Norway and Denmark (CPH base being best of with the strong DKK) I don't have the exact number as of today, neither am I certain about which level you enter the salary ladder at. It depends on rating and/or previous experience, I think. That said, I think I am not far off by saying 4000 EUR is what you start with. Per diem of 500-1000 EUR on top of that. The pension is OK. Health insurance is included. Fixed roster is 5/4 standard. There are various part time solutions available if you've got children.

I think there is some money yearly for shoes, maybe 4000dkk, and also Danish per diems (traktamente) for overnights.
