I want my table back. perfect for sudoku, laptop, my crew meal. why is Boeing so obsessed about pilots having to wrestle the cattle up front.

I am flying Boeing myself and the discussion about which one is better and so on I find amusing. But there is always some facts coming up during theese discussions and it can not be all wrong. .....They have done testing of Airbus in the northern part of norway and find that it is using to much rwy and the "hands on" characteristics are not satisfactory...It is my impression that you are not able to fly the airbus 100% stick and rudder and that you will not be able to bank it ...lets say 60 degrees if you had to. To those of you that have flown both, what do you think about this, is it all crap?

It's CRAP!
The Airbus can:
Fly Track/ FPA. Fly Go around (Also with engine failure) with A/P and A/T engaged. CAT IIIa engine out.
Yes, The bigger Boeings can do this, but so can the baby Airbus and not the 737 (Not even the NG)

I heard the price for the fail operational was way overprized and the days you really would need this is to few. I would love to try an airbus, has only been on jumpseat a couple of times and I can see that it is a really nice working environment. Thank you for answering my quesstions, but I still feel that one answer is missing. Lets say you have a circling and you are not able to fly it in automode, you are flying manually and for some reason you need to bank it more than 45 degrees. Would the airbus system let you? Or would it override your maneuver?

Automation is fine and dandy indeed. Get paid for doing virtually nothing but computer programming . Seriously though, what was considered to be the weakest link on the flight deck say 20 years ago was CRM, or lack thereof. Now the weakest link is becoming lack of stick and rudder skills. Before I get my head torn off here I`d like to say that I`m not saying that anybody who flies fully automated aircraft are bad pilots. Maybe a bit rusty in the seat-of-your-pants department, but not bad pilots.
But one thing I`m curious about, and I`m asking because I don`t know; does Airbus provide force feedback in the sidestick, or is it more like the old Atari joysticks? What I`m getting at is - can you still feel the aircraft, or do you just command a pitch/bank attitude?

No, there is no artificial feel like the 737 on the AB. Because it is "fly by wire" handling is different than flying "plain hydraulics" Yes, I think your manual flying skills will deteriorate slightly from "fly by wire". (Why is the stick so damned heavy? Crap! Forgot to trim. Why does the nose pitch up/ down? Aaaah.. Thrust)
No, I have never seen a 737 equipped with fail operational and I don't think I will in the near future. It does have TRK/FPA which is super for NPA etc.
Correct me if I'm wrong (again), but the AB will go to 67 deg AOB manually, but roll back to 33 ish if you let go of the stick. BUT If you have to do 60 deg AOB close to the ground in an airliner you are in a place you shouldn't have put yourself in the first place

Nice aircraft, crap seats! Can't understand why they couldn't change those low cost seats! They are completely useless on the 320-series where we did sort of 4 - 5 hour trips, imagine how they are on an ULH trip!

Airbus seats
Hi guys,
Captainprop, I fly the biggest bus on ULH sectors and the seats are very comfortable in all classes.I believe Economy seats are slightly bigger due the long sectors. Needless to say, 1st class suits and SPA facilities are going to keep you busy for a few hours..
If you need to bank more than 30 degrees during circling you should go around! However it is possible to bank up to 67 degrees should you need to in an extreme situation.
Last but not least, handling skills are compromised when flying any automated aeroplane, not just the Airbus FBWs.

So, if I understand this correctly... The pilot does the control input (stick/yoke or even autopilot), the aircraft computers figure out if the input is an ok manouver and either lets you go ahead or say "uh-uh" and limits you to a given attitude? So who is really flying?

The Pilot!!! Just like in F16, Gripen, F22....most modern fighter aircraft comes to my mind. Or is it not the pilot flying those aircraft?
