Finnish reality check needed
On a thread in the CC forum, a poster called hubbly has made some truly astounding statements about Finland and it's citizens.
The statement is so incredibly ignorant that it can not remain unchallenged.
However, not being Finnish, nor living there, I feel I should abstain. (it's difficult! )
If any resident Fin would like to set this person straight without becoming abusive, I think it would be a very good thing.
Thread here.

No Hard Feelings...
After a long absence I browsed this site and what I found, we are back where it was. Only difference is that now we have an arrogant master of the house who is introducing a new way of doing the old British imperialism.
He is right that I was not invited to his site, but since I would not like to be here as uninvited guest will this posting be my last one. So do not bother to analyze nor comment it to me anyway.
What could make the Finnish appearence here so untolerated, have Finns behaved badly here or is it somebodys girlfriend arrested in Helsinki... I wonder.
Excuses have been said like lack of moderators etc. BULL say I.
But like you said, this sand pit is yours and so are the toys.
Have fun and all the best.
ps. Dans must be happy as he-ll now

Couldn`t agree more. I also feel like most unwelcome for these pages after the declaration from the top. So, now I must learn swedish if I like to follow what is going on in the north. Or to hope that some news are also published in english.
I would understand better the policy if the entire forum was in english or all nordic languages were allowed not only the part of them.
But as you said they got the toys....
Nikolai

I think it is mandatory for Professional Pilots to master the English language.

As for insulting the Finnish drinking habits, actually this will apply to most of the population around the arctic circle. Also the northern part of Russia. Eskimos have the lowest tolerance. Recall reading some anthropology article claiming this may be due to our nutrition, i.e. traditionally not enough fruits and vegetables during ages. Pls Google for contradictory facts before you start laughing.
Why, the crew of a Mediterranean charter airline got so scared by a drunk Norwegian that they made a non-scheduled landing to have him arrested. All he wanted was more beer, and when the cabin crew didn't seem to understand this, he felt the need to have the captain set them straight. The cockpit crew didn't understand him either, perhaps because their fellow countrymen never behave like this after drinking.
Probably no need for the Finnish or any of us northerners to feel sore about outsiders contributing their misinterpretation of these allegedly bad habits? Only a cultural difference.
Somewhat difficult to see the the actual "problem". So:
- Owner of the website would like to monitor posts so that he doesn't get sued.
- In order to secure this, a forum must have moderators speaking the language.
- If no Finnish moderator, their aviators also know English and will have to use that.
- Same applies to the fourth Nordic country, Iceland. Don't hear much from them, though.
As for language, if something is of general interest it should be posted in English. If it's very local and of limited interest to the larger public, it can be done in our own language. Sometimes it's nice for expats to exercise their mother tongue, no?

Nardi Riviera,
You are absolutely right that it should be nice to be able to write on once own language. I have been away from Finland last 26 years but still love to keep an eye on aviation there. Some stories published here about Finland were better written in Finnish language as they were interesting mainly for Finns, I assume.
I look forward that PPRUNE will appoint a moderator and Finns can then have a way to spread rumours...

MD 900 Explorer,
My problem with swedish, danish and norwegian is that I do not understand the language! I do understand english, spanish and finnish. If that makes someone arse and idiot, then I must be the one. Thank you for pointing it out.

Aww MD900, such name-calling was totally unfair! Unless you're female and it was that time of the month...
I still believe that IF a topic is of limited interest for other nationalities, there should be no harm in posting it in the local lingo. Why, many other forums here use languages we don't understand.
This "discussion" is a waste of energy. Problem should be easily solved with a Finnish moderator.
Hoping for some more activity here. Then maybe not, as there's so much interesting material on English-language forums that we are able to read.
Info on the VERY FEW job openings in our area may only bore the rest of the world. As well as our local problems with CAA etc.
Happy flying!
