Iran's trying to distance itself from Putin's fiasco in Ukraine. Today its new president, Masoud Pezeshkian condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
"We have never approved of Russian aggression against Ukrainian territory.” And also denied providing missiles to Moscow. https://www.theguardian.com/world/li...08a5bb140a7dea |
I wonder what this means for the Houthi missile attacks which Iran has tacitly supported. Something or nothing? Any number of nations are not happy about the Red Sea becoming more dangerous as a transit path for their merchant shipping, and not just those in "The West" ...
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signalled on September 24 that Tehran is prepared to resolve its longstanding nuclear dispute with Western powers in a bid to have sanctions removed. In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly, Pezeshkian expressed Iran’s desire for an easing of US sanctions that have severely impacted the country’s economy, reiterating Tehran’s readiness to re-engage in talks on its nuclear programme. “The Islamic Republic is ready to reach an understanding with the West to end this impasse,” Pezeshkian said. “We seek peace, not conflict, and believe that diplomacy remains the best path forward.” The US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear accord under former President Donald Trump in 2018, re-imposing stringent sanctions on Iran. Multiple attempts to revive the agreement have since failed, with tensions between Tehran and the West escalating further. During his speech, Pezeshkian referenced Iran’s vaunted Shi’ite saint Imam Ali to “extend compassion”, referring to “brothers in religion or equals in all creation.” Pezeshkian’s comments come at a time of strained relations between Iran and Western nations, particularly in the wake of the Hamas militant group’s attack on southern Israel on October 7 and a weakened nuclear deal. Pezeshkian, regarded as a relatively moderate leader since taking office in August, also criticised Israel during his UN address, calling its actions in Gaza “genocide” and urging an international ceasefire to halt escalating violence. |
Answers that question…
❗️🇷🇺🇮🇷 The IRGC is brokering talks between Russia and the Houthis to supply the latter with P-800 Yakhont supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles. Yakhont is the export variant of Onyx, and is already in service with Hezbollah. It is unclear if the deal would just be for missiles, or complete K-300P Bastion-P coastal missile batteries with Predel-E over the horizon radars. Even the missiles alone would be a significant enhancement of the Houthis' anti-ship capabilities, and would threaten US warships. P-800 (3M55) [NATO: SS-N-26 Strobile] is a capable missile, with a secondary land strike capability, that has been used extensively by Russia to target the Ukrainian port city of Odesa. The Shin Bet security agency in a statement warns that Iran has increasingly been attempting to carry out assassinations in Israel.
Recently, several assassination plots were foiled, including some in very advanced stages, the details of which have not yet been released to the public, the Shin Bet says. "In recent weeks, the Shin Bet has detected a significant rise in Iran's efforts to advance assassination attacks against targets in Israel," the agency says. The Shin Bet says that Iran has been attempting to recruit Israeli civilians to harm senior officials in the country. It notes the recent arrest of Moti Maman, who was smuggled into Iran twice and was tasked with assassinating the prime minister, defense minister, or head of the Shin Bet. The agency says that Iran has also attempted to recruit Israelis online. The Iranian operatives locate Israeli targets on social media, including channels relating to cryptocurrency, finance, and job searching, the Shin Bet says. The Iranian operatives would offer those Israelis a high salary for carrying out various tasks, including" placing money or phones in various areas in Israel, distributing flyers, painting graffiti, and even setting fire to cars and physically harming people," according to the Shin Bet. "The Shin Bet asks the public to have increased attention and take extra caution in any case where suspicion arises... especially when the sums involved are large and are not adequate to the nature of the requested tasks, or.. if the requested tasks are unusual," the agency says. The Shin Bet calls on the public to report any suspicious activity. |
Reference the Israeli’s taking out the 3 power stations in Yemen in retaliation to the launch of a ballistic missile attack….
Iran's largest power plant: This power plant produces a total of about 2880 megawatts of electricity….. |
95% of Iran's 🇮🇷 oil export is through the tiny Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf. Here's a nice “Before” photo of it 👇
“After” photo coming soon. |
Saw a little tidbit on the news.
Iran sources stated that one of their hypersonic missiles attacked Israel, and took out an Arrow SAM launcher/system. Iranian state media reported that the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) destroyed the infamed Arrow air defence radar in Israer, deploying its first Fattah-1 hypersonic medium-range ballistic, which was unveiled in 2023. A senior Iranian official quoted by Reuters said that both the US and Russia were alerted through diplomatic channels ‘shortly before the attacks’. Some of the weapons are reported to have targeted tanks located at the so-called Netzarim Corridor, set up to split northern Gaza from the south in the early days of the Israel’s war on Palestine. Glaring blasts were also heard in the Jordan Valley, on the border between Jordan and the West Bank. |
Meanwhile, in the real world…

3 Israeli air bases were targeted according to Iran:
1) Navatim, where F-35 aircraft are deployed. 2) Netzarim, where F-15 aircraft used to kill Hassan Nasrallah are deployed. 3) Tel Nof air base near Tel Aviv. Appears this video was indeed filmed outside of Israel's Nevatim Airbase. After looking at the geolocation with @gbrumfiel, appears the video was filmed from just south of the base at around 31.16204, 35.01097. Chairs match with cafe chairs. |

Wondering how Israelis will respond.
Returning fire using Jerichos - that's got the strategic messaging of full-scale open regional war - but looks like we're there already. Cruise missiles fired from jets - Delilah (or Popeye Turbo) - that would appear to mean crossing the border to be in range of many targets - ie Fordo, or Tehran itself. A lot of options - and target sets. |
Why am I thinking we're about to find out just how good (or not) the F-35 is in a real-world combat situation...

"attacked by200 ballistic missiles that make V2s look like fireworks."
Seriously? A V-2 carried a 1000 kg; the biggest from Iran carries 2,000 kg. Over 1,300 V-2s landed in London alone. The meaningless difference is range and guidance. In terms of use, the Iranians prioritized military targets rather than schools and hospitals. |
This may have a bearing on how Israel chooses to retaliate:
https://www.twz.com/israel-has-exten...s-f-35s-report Jordan won't let them overfly - not clear on how they'd get in: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle...ns-2024-08-10/ Noting Biden's calls for de-escalation, would the US allow staging of an attack from Al Udeid, Ali Al Salem or the like? |

By a strange coincidence the USS Georgia arrived in the region a couple of weeks ago….
