I was scanning a few forums today and saw a similar topic posted on another forum.

Does anyone have any pictures of themselves flying/in cockpit pictures that they would like to share?

A Soviet Krivak II in the Med. during the Cold War. Taken with a 50 zillion mm lens obviously, since it was totally verboten to get anywhere near them. And a second pass over the foredeck as a pair was unthinkable.

There was a piccy from the second pass we did. You could tell what rank the Officer of the Watch was. Me, I was just sticking in close like a good #2.

Blimey, you even got Betty out to see who was making all the noise, nice to see 14 in there, and 31? There used to be a sample of the 31 roundel flash painted on the wall in the ASF hangar at Bruggen where they were working out the design before the squadron formed.

Thanks for those. Lovely pics. I had the honour to serve on 27 Sqn Tornado in the late eighties and 27 Sqn Chinook a decade later. How many can say that?

I also have a huge and superb picture of a 27 Sqn Tornado flying over the Malaysian Jungle, taken in the eighties, hanging in my study. Any chance you were in that aircraft?? :ok:

It was 14 Sqn that was in charge of that whole Queens Birthday flypast. However, we used every serviceable jet at Bruggen to achieve it. I was on 14 at the time and it was bloody good fun:D:D

I was also on 31 Sqn Designate when we first formed with the Tornados at Bruggen back in 84. Before we had any jets (or aircrew) we had two rooms in ASF (one for us and one for the SEngO) where we unofficially formed the Sqn and started to cut out dayglo for the tool boards. That is why there is a painting of the original 31 Sqn flash there. The biggest problem was making sure that it was designed and fitted without painting over the side pitot probes:ok:

Gp Capt Joe Simm (then Stn Cdr) flew our first jet in and we made our initial home sharing with 20 Sqn Jags in the south west corner. That site eventually became 9 Sqn and we moved to our proper home in the North West corner; the nicest HAS site at Bruggen and fortunately very close to the Fear Dry Inn on 431 MU.:)

That will be the Joe Simm who was OC Stanley then RAF Mount Pleasant - nearly killed me by driving me across the front of a huge Volvo earth mover

I cannot remember you forming on 20 Sqn jags site and believe me I was one of the last, I watched the Squadron stand down parade through the fence of QRA and we remained on QRA after the Squadron had officially gone, I then moved over to 14 jags which was a far superior Jag Sqn in every way and form.. I then at the end of my tour had several weeks at 431 MU eng bay as they had a shuffle about to see the jag squadron strengths sorted until their disbandment....
First and last time I ever strayed from first line and it was dire... It taught me never get posted to a bay.... And bar those couple of weeks I never did.

I did look at your flash design...... And to be honest thought it was very stumpy and needed stretching with the tail of it redoing..... Sorry, but I did, couldn't believe it when everyone else seemed to adopt it.

BTW if you look at the 14 association website, I'm on the Gib Jag Picture, the lack of a 20 one tells you something

Trust me, we did form on 20 Sqn jags. There was an Indian Jengo on one shift and a Pakistani Jengo on the other shift. Jeff Field was the WO and he transferred to us (31) along with some rigga Chief but I can’t remember his name. Also a sooty Cpl, Mick Berryman joined us, cracking lad. If I remember rightly the reason you carried on QRA, even after you disbanded, was because “we” were not ready. I also went to the 14 Sqn Jag final bash. I’m sure we must have been in the same room getting pi$$ed at some point. Great days:ok:

Wow! It is a great pic. Sadly I missed that detachment because I was posted to a Rolls Royce Project Team. To be honest I was gutted as I lived in Malaysia as a kid. I take it you remember Tojo??:eek:

The Jengo was Indian, the Sengo was Pakistani or Indian and if I remember a lower caste than the Jengo that cause friction. The Jengo who was a nice guy and wore a Turban until his father died, then came in one morning sans turban with a short back and sides ( was a promise to his father to maintain it whilst he was alive )
They were great on exercise and I felt sorry for them as neither could eat Bacon and as the breakfast was beans, compo sausage, egg and Bacon with fried bread, they tended to give it away, bet their cholesterol count was better..
Jeff Fields replaced WO Robinson that if memory had a relapse and had a certificate to say he was erm sane.

Sadly I had departed before the 14 Sqn disbandment piss up, which rankles, as did missing the end of my tour on it.
