I guess you won't get any replies via email then

Seldomfitforpurpose 15th Jan 2009 21:46

JPA came on line way before Xmas..........................:(

14greens 15th Jan 2009 23:19

ahh its finally got out then? wondered how long

14greens 15th Jan 2009 23:21

how did the virus get a pass at the main gate anyhow, or did it go over the fence

MAINJAFAD 16th Jan 2009 00:42

You wouldn't believe how the virus got on to the system if what I've been told is true (word is that it's actually a very nasty worm), However I'm not going to say what I’ve been told here on an open forum.

SVK 16th Jan 2009 01:14

Its ok though lads and lassies because we've got everything written down on big, chinagraph display boards! Oh no, that's right...we were told to stop using them because BO(LLO)CS is the future.:ugh:

Pontius Navigator 16th Jan 2009 06:22

Not just RAF and RN.

Also I got one after Christmas it put an Autorun.INF file on each had drive which had a call to a boot file - rescycle.exe (sic).

I only found out when I tried to Open a drive and got that error message - I don't usually Open drives using My Computer. Quick search on the internet and I followed the advice on finding and deleting the Autorun files.

It will replicate to pen drives and USB drives too. Must admit, I have two rarely used USB drives so I must check them now. You also need to empty the recycle bin and check backup sets.

Mr C Hinecap 16th Jan 2009 06:58

I was told, quite seriously and by a very po-faced SNCO RAFP that it got in 'through the phone lines'.

Well f*** my old boots - I hadn't expected it to come in over the fence.

The Nr Fairy 16th Jan 2009 07:51

The Register has a story here although no technical details.

It wouldn't surprise me at all - my day job is selling IT security software, and the number of times I see that customers haven't got up to date patches and all the rest it's no surprise that this sort of thing happens.

BTW, for a laugh, check the "Odds and Sods" for some fun stories - the "pooing doll", the "natural harvest" recipe book, the "humping dog" USB stick . . . actually, maybe THAT'S where the virus came from !

MightyGem 16th Jan 2009 08:07

Get a Mac. :)

The Helpful Stacker 16th Jan 2009 08:58

The NR Fairy - I'm rather skeptical about the authenticity of that article you've linked to.

An article, apparently written buy Lewis Page, in which the RAF hasn't be blamed. Its can't be his handiwork.;)

Wader2 16th Jan 2009 10:00

Really LPs article doesn't add anything to the brew. Now the story I heard, and eminently believable is tha someone left a door open, if you follow my drift.

NutLoose 16th Jan 2009 11:50

Suprised anyone one is still writing Viruses for Windows 3.1 :p

BBC reporting that

Computer virus hits navy e-mails

A computer virus has attacked the Royal Navy's communications network, knocking out e-mails and the internet.

HMS Ark Royal, which left Portsmouth for Liverpool on Monday, was still without the system on Thursday.

An MoD spokesman said the weapons and navigational systems were unaffected by the computer virus.

He said personnel were able to use "welfare phone systems" to contact family but would not comment on reports that 75% of the fleet was affected.

It was understood the problem started last week, but the MoD would not confirm how long it had been going on for.

An MoD spokesman said: "The weapons and navigational systems remain unaffected by the computer virus.

"Action was immediately taken to isolate the infected systems and commence virus-cleansing procedures to protect from re-infection.

"The ship [HMS Ark Royal], which is operating around the UK, is fully capable of undertaking all operational tasking.

"All crew members are still able to communicate with families via the welfare phone system and personal mobile phones."

14greens 16th Jan 2009 13:17

And when we do get the system back again, obviously first 2 or 3 days its back on JPA will freeze again due to be overloaded with people trying to catch up with FSI and other claims

Joys of tech eh?

FlapJackMuncher 16th Jan 2009 13:52

First became aware of it earlier this week.
Can't say where it was obviously but some staff were alledgedly (sp) sat at desks doing not alot. Must work in paperless offices.

p.s careful analysis of the facts stated in this thread should indicate that none of us are aboard one of Her Majesties Ships.

spheroid 16th Jan 2009 17:07

No Virus at Yeovilton this past week but thats because there is nowhere to park at Yeovilton.

Grabbers 16th Jan 2009 17:20

This virus, designed to destroy from within? Not given the code name T0RPY is it?

MAINJAFAD 16th Jan 2009 17:48

Nothing wrong with JPA, worked fine when I used it today. It was everything else on the unit IT wise that was hooped (except my terminal which was clean as a whistle. However haven't used it in the last week).

Throttle Pusher 16th Jan 2009 18:50

Things I've never heard said:

"Oh dear the white boards crashed"

"I can't log on to the white board"

"This chinagraphs slow today" :O

This chinagraphs slow today
Now that made me chuckle after a particularly long week.

Hopefully, it shouldn't affect home PCs - speaking to CIS Eng (or whatever they are called this week) it only affects networks. Apparently even IBM has been infected, so it's not just our delapidated systems.

Vage Rot 17th Jan 2009 19:20

Virus!!

I believe the virus name is EDS. Apparently, it completely fooked up the NHS system a few years ago but we still employed the same company to do dii !!!:=

Mighty Quercus 17th Jan 2009 22:33

Sunday Times now quoting 24 RAF bases (that must be all of them!!) and 75% of Navy ships infected.

Virus ‘sends RAF e-mails to Russia’ - Times Online

At my particular unit PC's been down all week with no forecast of getting back online for some time. Deep Joy!!!

14greens 18th Jan 2009 15:39

Times reckons all emails going to some Russian server, damn I hope Olgy is taking note of the info I need for the London to Brighton ride in June and he is going toturn up at the training rides

Cake! party! and arse spring to mind, we still have no PC's to log in to! only been a week

You mean email your Outlook diary, address book, emails home

Synch your PDA to your home PC.

Email you files back to work?

No, you would never get a plod doing that, would you?

erum, that is exactly what one plod told me he did.

R 21 19th Jan 2009 14:54

Just a thought will this affect this months pay? I'm sure JPA's virus software is excellent and they could not possibly use this as an excuse not to pay people !! :}

The torygraph named names today. Looking at the Microsoft website the patch was released 3 months ago!

Viruses, software patches & stuff

Wader2 says

the patch was released 3 months ago!
I hate to defend the UK MoD ICT folks on this, but "to patch or not to patch" is actually quite a hard call to make.
  • Do you just apply patches as soon as Microsoft, and Adobe, and Sun (for Java), and ... release them, and expect that they will fix the advertised problem, and hope like heck they won't break anything in your highly individualized cr@p-pile of software including stuff so ancient and British that nobody in the good ole Yew Ess of Ay has ever heard of it,
or
  • Do you carefully test all the patches to make sure they don't accidentally break anything else, and run the risk of a vulnerability being exploited while you're testing the patch.
Damned if you do, and damned if you don't. :\

The only way to avoid this kind of nasty is to not allow any desktop Internet access, block all the USB port usage, fit CD drives only to 'special' machines, and filter the email all to hell. Then the users bitch the system is unusable for all the things they want to do.

Which do you want: usability or security?

St Johns Wort 21st Jan 2009 07:12

Whats all the fuss about?

Dont know why you're all bitchin', its been bliss without the damned things.

themightyimp 21st Jan 2009 21:55

It's an admin system so there has been no effect to the operational output :ooh:

CounterSunk 22nd Jan 2009 16:27

Talk is of fingers from on high pointing at the future home of all RAF AT as the possible trigger for the virus infection. Ooooh err, missus.
