Sticky Threads - good or a pain?

Having just spent too long looking at everyone else, I now know that apart from the cabin crew and fragrant harbour wanabees forums, we in the mil aircrew bit have the equal 3rd highest number of 'sticky' threads.

FAQs aside, if something is good enough to stay at the top, it will. If it is dull let it wither into obscurity and pass on.

Please, get rid of this pain on the screen that means every time I log in I have to scroll down to see the most recently updated threads.

Twinact 17th Apr 2004 06:04

AGREED,

Interesting and popular threads will stay near the top on their own merits.

Hopefully removing sticky's will prevent some large sticky's going over the same ground ad nausem, with nothing new ever coming out!

Echo 5 17th Apr 2004 06:15

Good point here. I notice that one of the threads hasn't been posted to for 13 days and a couple of others for about 6 days.
I think the stickies should be removed and let the threads rotate like all the others.
Moderator - Are you taking note ?

There is always for's and against 'stickies' and your comments are fair - to a point.

"If it's good enough to stay at the top it will" is not in itself an answer because it takes days, even weeks, for some people to catch up with what has been posted, and as the forum is one of the faster moving forums we take that into account. The Chinook thread will stay. If you have an argument with that it is a matter for your conscience.

The others are relatively young an while 'you' may have a problem with them remaining, there will be a lot more who don't, who enjoy the contact with old mates and memories. The Vulcan thread is a case in point. In this case one PPRuNer is assessing the possibility of gathering the info together for publishing.

The other side of the coin is one of interest by those, both in and out of the services, who can get a good feel of classic machines that drivers on here actually flew. That is a taste of the past that comes to a relatively small number of people. PPRuNe is a provider of that. Look at the number of views the threads have as evidence.

We do keep an eye on 'stickies' so rest assured that when they have run there course they will slip away to a safe resting place.

Radar Muppet 17th Apr 2004 08:20

Bin them. Please.

Twinact 17th Apr 2004 08:25

The Chinook thread will stay. If you have an argument with that it is a matter for your conscience.
I would be grateful for an explanation of this - surely its relevance is limited to those with an interest in it and its stance not necessarily supported by all.

BEagle 17th Apr 2004 09:17

The Chinook sticky has relevance to all decent people.

Enough said.

Twinact 17th Apr 2004 09:28

This is the wrong place to discuss the incident of 10 years ago, the subject is sticky's, however, your inference over decency is offensive!

You are entitled to an opinion, don't push it on others who may chose to disagree.

forget 17th Apr 2004 09:48

I think this deserves to become a sticky.

BEagle 17th Apr 2004 09:56

Twinact - it wasn't an incident, it was an accident. Despite the cause never being fully established beyond any doubt whatever, the deceased crew were pilloried by 2 senior officers who apportioned a verdict of 'gross negligence' upon them - and who still refuse to change their blinkered opinion despite the volume of evidence presented by others more qualified to comment. This injustice must be overturned; the breathtaking arrogance of Ba$tard Bill when being 'Paxmanned' flumoxed even Jeremy Paxman.

It will, I hope, stay until justice is properly served.

I don't particularly care what happens to the other stickies - but if people find it irritating to have to scroll down past them, then they must have very low thresholds of tolerance indeed.

Tourist 17th Apr 2004 10:56

Bin Them.
I agree that some threads ie Chinook are very important, and that we would all agree that if it happened to us we would love to have the level of support they are getting, but people who are interested will always find them anyway.
Here's an idea, put stickies at the bottom of the page, thus obviating us of the need to scroll past them!

BEagle 17th Apr 2004 11:03

Perhaps just a different headline font - or put them in their own header box to make things simpler for digi-yoof who finds scrolling too demanding....

PPRuNe Pop 17th Apr 2004 11:08

They cannot be put at the bottom the page!

And to be frank if you find them irritating just don't bother to read them - why scroll when you can go straight to the first non-sticky. Why the fuss?

Sorry, but we decide whether they stay or they go, and they are staying- until we feel they have had their day - which might not be too far away for one of them.

propulike 17th Apr 2004 15:12

If you use the argument that a thread deserves to be sticky because of the number of views it's had, then we should have Movers V Loadies as a sticky.

Oh, and Sea Jet.

More fun and games in the Magic Kingdom.

And F4 Phantom of course.

Or you could just acknowledge that these are staying at the top of the pile on merit - as would the stickies that are subscribed to regularly.

we decide whether they stay or they go, and they are staying
With reasoning like that, did I marry you a few years ago?

PPRuNe Pop 17th Apr 2004 15:29

Fortunately no, but I think we would have headed for a divorce.:suspect:

But who said it depended on how many views a post needs before it becomes a sticky?

The reasoning has to be like that. No other way. And, of course mods are needed :p

Best get used to it I guess. ;)

Echo 5 17th Apr 2004 15:35

propulike,

Nice one but just look at the stats on the main threads:

Vulcan 58605 views 414 replies = 0.706%
Chinook 68564 views 904 replies= 1.318%
Canberra 12511 views 100 replies= 0.799%
Victor 6898 views 47 replies= 0.681%

AND

Movers v Loadies 17740 views 318 replies = 1.79%

As the originator of the Movers v Loadies thread which wins hands down on views/replies ratio can I apply for a Sticky please.

Waiting in anticipation !!

E5.:ok:

PS: Sorry, looks like PPrune Pop got in while I was still busy with the calculator.

johnfairr 17th Apr 2004 17:00

Sticky or just time-expired..?

Anybody who bothers to view the Military Aviation Thread on Pprune does so because they have an interest in that particular subject, be it as aircrew, groundcrew, wannabe or just plain curious.

At the beginning of the F4 Phantom thread there was a brief discussion between BEagle and myself as to whether or not the thread should continue. My view was that if there was enough interest in a subject it would become self-sustaining until natural lethargy took over, ie all the stories had had an airing, there was no new news, and it had run its course.

One of the moderators put it quite succinctly when he said that the threads would be archived, there to be looked at by future genrations should they be inquisitive enough, so that they are not lost.

This seems to me to be the way of democracy, voting with your keyboard was the phrase I used. If there is enough interest out there, the thread will continue. The Chinook thread has posts every other day or so, people keep returning to the nub of the situation, which is something I am not qualified to have an opinion on. However, I defend to the death their right to have a forum in which they can garner support, rebut opposite views (of which there appear to be very few, which strengthens their case, I believe) and attempt to turn over what, in their opinion, is a miscarriage of justice. Thus I agree with the Pprune moderators.

What saddens me is the lack of more responses on the Ascoteers Multiple Choice over the last week or so, likewise the 1 Gp Dining-In Night stories.

Darwin Rules OK? Natural Selection and if they get enough interest they will become self-perpetuating.

:ok:

ssultana 17th Apr 2004 17:33

They should go. It goes against the way the forum works.

Flatus Veteranus 17th Apr 2004 18:11

I wonder if it would be possible to archive some of these "stickies" in a way that they would be easily accessible? I occasionally refer back, for example, to the famous 1 Group reunion dinner thread, which is the only detailed account (of which I know) of that legendary occasion. I have taken several prints and delight in showing them to retired officers of the "older" and more decorous services. They invariably pop their monocles and have the vapours at the scandalous behaviour of the junior service "yobbos"! ;)

SilsoeSid 17th Apr 2004 23:15

Risking being barred, again, for a personal view.
Stickies should go, at least the present ones.

Alas the chiefs have the power and like Tony, will not listen to the people.

Over 141,000 views of a picture thread on rotorheads, wasn't good enough to start a military version here. Although I appreciate that isn't a requirement......to be popular that is :ooh:

I discussed this matter earlier at http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthr...hreadid=125328
Unfortunately I had replies such as

The Chinook is a sticky because it deals with Chinook enquiry

The Vulcan and Victor, as well as the Canberra are classics of their time and got 'Sticky' status

What chance is there to rid this forum of these stickies with those sort of attitudes?

Or... Why not have a completely NEW FORUM specifically for those who wish to reminise on types they used to fly?

That way you could have a multitude of threads entitled....

Did you used to fly the......(insert your type here)?

I'm sure most contributors to these threads are civi now anyway, a lot more interest will be gathered from those who do not enter into the military forum and the military forum would be freed up at the top of the listings.

VIOLA!!
