Under the headline “Saddam ‘plans to use UN staff as hostages’, (with the sub heading “Iraqi leader ‘has ordered use of chemical arms’”, Julian Colemen in Washington and Phillip Sherwood in London of the Telegraph Group go on to give their readers chapter and verse on the Iraqi plans to defend Baghdad.
It’s all pretty standard Torygraph blah until the last few paragraphs, where the writers say:
We have been assured by everyone from Saddam himself to these Quixotic aspirants for this year’s Darwin Awards now on their way to Baghdad by (slow) bus to offer themselves as human shields that Iraq doesn’t have any chemical weapons, so if reporters can come up with this information, (which we can only assume to be 100% accurate, just as all their other stories are - see the thread on ‘Could Your Pilot be Drunk?), why haven’t the UN inspectors been able to track this ‘chemical and biological unit’ down? Wouldn’t such a unit be pretty close to the top of the Inspectors’ list?
Closer to the subject of these ‘human shields’(!), it’s their sheer arrogance that sends my head spinning. Do they honestly think that their (willing) presence at targets in Baghdad is going to cause the Americans one moment’s pause in their choice of targets or on the pickle switch? Personally, I hope to God that the collateral damage to Iraqi civilians is as close to zero as it can possibly be, (which I know is a huge ‘ask’), ‘cos the sad fact is, the poor bastards have suffered enough as it is, but I think these European clowns on their way to Baghdad are nothing more than sorry grandstanders chasing their individual fifteen minutes of fame.
Funny how they’re going by bus, isn’t it? Particularly when there’s every chance the shooting will be long over by the time they get there. Ahh, but they’ll have made their grand gesture and still be alive to prattle on ad infinitum about what might have been if they’d been able to get there in time to stop the American bombs from fallings with their bared chests.

Most ominously, the SRG’s (Special Republican Guards) chemical and biological unit has been ordered to prepare missiles armed with chemical warheads for deployment in Baghdad.
