USS Canberra being commissioned in SYD

Well, I didn’t have this on my 2023 Bingo card!

Big occasion for a vessel that has, let’s say, “issues”.

BH, you are too kind.

the littoral concept should have had some promise, it is amazing that it was so badly fouled up. Simple concept to build a boat at least so strong that they don't fall apart through the action of floating. BU ships has made some clangers in recent times, at a time that other forces are putting out some pretty decent kit. The TF concept that the USN has evolved into doctrinally provides high value targets for concentrating attention of the red team, and with the most recent displays of equipment in Russia's field trials (and ICJ trials to follow)it is noted that some stuff even as lousy as Russia's can get through, certainly, a number of Western munitions appear to be hard to beat. Major concern remains supercavitating torpedo type munitions, which are not on display at the current Russian demolition derby (how to destroy your own military in 18 easy months), they remain a risk to TF doctrine. More is better is valid when even a jet ski can take out a bridge, but they have to be able to float, so self kit setting the boat designs seems like an own goal.

The Little Crappy Ship program is a case study in how not manage a ship building program. Too many cooks in the kitchen, an out of control "good ideas club" with nobody truly in charge and and then the panic cost cutting in all the wrong areas when the cost got out of control. Too bad because the initial concept made sense. There are lots of missions where a full capability Destroyer/Cruiser is massive overkill

Well. Naval vessels are well out of my wheel house (pun intended) but aside from that, I found the location interesting. I'm sure there's some commentary about the vessel itself, but I still see it's name as an honour.

I do wonder if the Yanks realise the issues they are going to have after naming it after the home of our national MP's. It will be full of sh!!t, be visited by dodgy "donors" at all hours, fail at every real test, be full of excuses, cost an absolute fortune more than it should and is worth, will only go in circles, be full of grog and disappear to hang out with really shady friends that have despicable human rights records. It will be replaced after about 3.5 years as well, leaving the USN asking - how did that happen? I thought it would be different in a better way!
