When I started flying with an airline the sim instructor could fly the 737 simulator better than I could. He however would not have been able to fly the real thing on a windy night with a 25 knot crosswind. For that you needed real experience..

When anyone quotes a live synthetic balance at you, 100/0, 70/30 etc. ask them where the data and studies are that back up the efficacy and safety of this. To my knowledge there aren't any and these numbers (like many others) are usually plucked out of the rear end of a VSO. There is however a fairly well publicised study by the USAF into increasing accident rates that highlights over reliance on synthetics as a causal factor.

Isn’t Valley just one cog in the system, surely to increase the flow by 50% you need to do the same throughout the rest of the system?

I think this is just a really misleading headline that should read :” Valley to increase simulator capacity by 50%”

Whence will they come?

Not as easy as augmenting a couple of squadrons of Gnats with another of Hunter T7 and GT6 was 50 years ago when the RAF was of a proper size.
That was easier because 3 Sqn merely re-equipped with Hunters owing to a chronic shortage of Gnats, so no new QFI’s involved at all.
