It's worth a lot more than 30 quid. Deceased estate maybe. Or a copy?

Exactly why I mentioned it now, no one looks at buying winter coats in the summer, ( Christ, i'm sounding like my mother ) so it's the time to pick them up possibly cheap.

The Torchwood re-enactors have obviously moved their allegiance elsewhere.

During my workshop training days at Locking, these were always known as KD greatcoats, good for the warm weather.

The only part of kit that had to be handed back at discharge (in the '70s at least) because it was considered as 'public clothing' or something like that. A quality clothing item, unlike those gawd-awful OR 'maternity' macs.

Why on earth anyone living in the UK would need or want a 'greatcoat' is beyond me. Most of the time the weather isn't really all that cold - and even when it is, it's only for short spells.

Winters are much less severe these days than those I recall from childhood, apart that is from '62-'63.

I never had any need for that flasher's mac with which we were issued at RAFC either. Someone stole mine and I never found the loss a problem....

Hooray for global warming!!

Why would anyone want an RAF Arctic Ventile Parka in the U.K. Beagle, but they do, one on eBay at £1000 and another at £1600, and I’ve seen them £2000 plus.

Not quite so. When I checked out via Innsworth, a "truly dedicated " supplier was determined to extract money from me, hence the white towels and infamous PT kit entered her "logic" and appeared on my bill.

The greatcoat was a shade problematic however given I had long returned it to public ownership via a student in the "Glanrafon" pub in Bangor.

I prefer to think of this deal as being a private enterprise intended to foster community relations whilst relieving SCAF of the burdensome paperwork associated with the items disposal.

The £20 came in useful in '73

Typically, I would wear my Greatcoat two or three times a year - until I was posted to an ISODET in Germany and then to an Embassy where it could get bone-snappingly cold for three months of the year - generally coinciding with commemorative events which would require me standing - shivering - for hours at a time. But the coldest I have ever experienced was the unveiling of the NZ War Memorial at Hyde Park Corner on 11 November, 2006. Bitterly cold and how I felt for the haka party, stripped to the waist. Who knew Maoris could be blue?

I now have 2 x large (44") greatcoats for disposal, btw. Not much use for them in a care home, sadly.

Anything vaguely 'military' will sell on eBay. I sold a field dressings haversack last year - presumably to a re-enactor - for a cool £85.

When you’ve seen an attractive lady wear it with not a lot else, then you’ll come to appreciate them.

Sad to say I am not Ventile clothing is expensive, and it's a worldwide market on ebay, so may end up in Canada etc.
