The interesting bit is watching the nose and vv wandering about when fully swept, max AoA and brakes out, but yes with the wings pulled back it did slow down rather quickly!

At the final Alconbury air show, one attraction of the flying display was a high speed flypast by an F-111. We watched as it came roaring in from the east with the wings fully swept, pulled hard....and went into serious wing rock. An FJ mate with whom I was talking had his eyes out on stalks - "I thought he was about to spear in off that", he said in rather a shaky voice.

On Day Two the flypast was repeated - but this time with the wings rather less swept!

Ahhh, the VRIAB. A bit sh1t in helicopters TBH - although there was one time at Odiham that, as No2 in a 3-ship, I had to climb to miss the TACAN…….

recovery of 32+2 RAAF Mirages
Numbers the RAAF will never have to worry about again. Getting 20 F/A-18's into the air at once was crowned a major achievment a few years ago.

Which brings to mind the famous/infamous F3 landing at Akrotiri.......

I would have liked to have watched one if the Binbrook survival scramble recoveries as they recovered back from the “trombone”.

Yes, 34 airborne from just 2 sqns (Not 3 and 75) was impressive. I wonder where all the rest of the airframes were kept?

Are there no ATCOs out there who remember the Wattisham "Standard Tirpitz" onto RWY 5 circa '73?
