I don't know why he went to Guadalcanal in the thirties for. It must have been an even bigger tip than it was ten years ago when I was there.

Dunno why you lot up there in Yurp are so worried.
We're sitting down here in Orstraylia wondering when Uncle Sam is going to grow a pair and bring out the big stick to put a stop to all this reef development.
I reckon that's far more likely to start a messy little conflagration.
My boss used to run a large Oz Government Department that has a peripheral involvement in security matters - and sighed recently that she thinks armed conflict with China is inevitable.
Must pay the Council rates before that happens!

I have a copy of the Peoples Almanac from 1975, by Wallechinsky and Wallace. I bought it from a second-hand bookstore about the early 1980's for $5.

I've got more laughs from that Almanac for $5, than anything else that I've paid more money for.

One chapter is devoted to the prominent scientists, seers, and soothsayers of the day - and their forecasts for the future.
It's a real giggle looking back on those predictions now.

Half the civilised world was supposed to be wiped out by a nuclear holocaust by 1983. China and America were going to start a World War in 1987 and billions were going to die.
There were wars predicted with Russia, with a dozen other belligerent nations - Armageddon in the Middle East was supposed to happen by 1999. World peace was going to happen in 1998. It goes on and on.

Funnily enough, not one future forecaster or seer predicted the 9/11 hit on the U.S. Not one predicted the rise of ISIS or radical Islam or the increase in terrorism.

We in the West won't go to war with Russia, the Russians have more sense than that.
The signs of extreme militarism within a country have to happen over a decade, along with a verifiable substantial increase in military production.
Neither is happening in Russia today, despite Putins chest beating.

Russia has numerous internal economic problems to deal with, and there's little sign of a major and serious increase in militarism towards the West. However, there's little doubt that extremist Islamics will continue to feel the heat from Russia.

The greatest single worry as regards a nuclear attack comes from the one rogue state who can rightly be described as belligerent, un-cooperative, and intent on increasing militarism towards the West, towards Japan, and towards South Korea.

Since it's apparently 1983 again, can I have my 1983 waistline back?
Don't worry, by T minus plus 3.1 should see that excess fat burnt off.... indeed by T Minus plus 3.2 you should be positively anorexic.

I imagine the reason this didn't happen was that no-one could find it...

I read Hackett's books back in the day.
Great take on WW3 in Europe full of British daring do.
The account of the air war over the central front makes for a great read.
However the book 'Arclight' may seem more relevant.

No, that's the permanent holiday location

Others are reasonably safe ... Phoenix, Anchorage and Cape Town. Northern Virginia is a bit risky, though, in sight of the Capitol Building

It almost did... but thanks to a relatively junior Russian military officer, in charge of very important button pushing, it didn't.

We in the West won't go to war with Russia, the Russians have more sense than that

Plus we do not have the facilities to handle such large POW numbers...

Germany will take them.

Anyway, luckily for me, I've been preparing for this eventuality...

BEagle ... you missed smoking! Apart from the packaging aspect, it is intended to phase out Menthol flavoured cigarettes by 2020, as "they are appealing to women". Not surprisingly, the female member of this household is severely unimpressed, and wishes to 'thank' HMG and Health Police for making her later years less pleasurable.

I dunno if I should take that as an insult to my 'manliness'?

I switched to Consulate as an interim step to stopping smoking.

I finally quit in 1971.

Back in the time of RAFG when the customs used to give confiscated ciggies out to the military and they were handed out for free at unit level, those of us who smoked would work our way through the B&H etc, then struggle through the unfiltered, the tobacco and finally the Menthol ( that was all that was left).... even the hardened smokers (then) amongst us would prefer to buy our own than smoke those freebies... it was like sucking on a burning polo mint.

I quit the RAF and on New Years eve during my resettlement, I went from 20 plus to nil overnight, that was 89 and I have never picked one up since... the thought of a Menthol cigarette still makes me feel queasy and gag..
