ELC for PPL
Hi all,
There is an old thread on how to use your £2000 ELC for a PPL but I was looking for an update from those currently in the know. I would have PM'd A&C but he is not taking PMs!
I last used my CAA PPL in 2002 (single engine aeroplane) and have forgotten everything. Now I am a stinking civvie I rather fancy using my last ELC to get current and fly for fun. My local club (Headcorn, Kent) is not registered with the ELCAS scheme and I suspect it will take a loooooooot of admin chafe to get them on the scheme.
1. Is it as simple as getting a med certificate from my local AME and applying for an EASA licence then flying a few hours with an FI followed by a skills test?
2. Is there anywhere in the southeast that takes ELCs for PPL training? According to this list Index of selected ELC approved providers and courses
my closest FTO is Thruxton...bit of a trek from west Kent but hey ho.
3. Is this project doomed to fail with the ELCAS/learning police?

I've been over to Thruxton and had a chat with them. Seem like nice guys, and I'm planning to do mine on the Decathlon to get the taildragger tick at the same time. Either way, good luck...Odiham was a long time ago!

I know quite a few who have carried out their PPL via ELCAS at RAF Lyneham Flying Club (based at Kemble/Cotswold Airport)

RAF Halton Aero Club are ELC registered and have full time instructors - Halton Aeroplane Club
I believe RAF Benson are also - RAF Benson Flying Club - Low cost Flying and PPL Training in Oxfordshire

Yes, you don't need to do it all again
Good news is you have passed the PPL in the past and it can be brought up to date as an EASA PPL or UK PPL (so no exams). The training is actually therefore for a Single Engine Piston (Land) class rating to go on said EASA PPL (your original licence is converted when you apply for the class rating). You will need the Class 2 medical for an EASA PPL. Consider the other types of PPL if you they fit your needs better (eg microlights).
As previous poster mentions you might want to kill 2 birds with one stone and make your "free" flying efficient by doing something at the same time (eg. Tailwheel, CS prop). Clearly it needs to be something you'll use though.
A RAFFCA club is definitely the way to go but I've used Thruxton too to achieve CRI, night and IMC.

If you obtained the PPL in the late 60's it were issued by the Board of Trade and the CAA will not replace them. That's my situation. After a lot of arguing I decided to stick to gliding where the rules make a bit more sense it not being not being in government departments' interest to obfuscate
