I don't say he would strike DC at first. But everything he planned he succeeded to do this or that way. Chechnya, Georgia, Crimea, E. Ukraine you name it... I don't think he would back off even if he had to use nukes, although I hope it never escalates to that point.

@ORAC: that article has some good points.

The next bit of "WTF" is probably less than a week away. The question is, what erratic thing will happen in and around Syria next?

The situation is tailor made for screw ups of many flavors.
  1. Multi faction civil war
  2. Multi sided foreign intervention
  3. Multiple agendas and national goals, many of which are not in harmony.

What trip wire will someone trip over next week?

And thats exactly why I wanted aus to have nothing to do with that side of the border unless invited by Assad. Syria is just a big cluster f#$K

I see the Germans are honouring France's request. Takes a lot to persuade them to go OOA.

What consequences may follow on Su-24 incident and why Russia has to respond on such aggression commensurately.

Can Russia Use Force in Response for Shot-Down Warplane?

Did anyone notice a discrepancy in media imagery shown of the Su-24 (Cy-24) shoot down?

The video of it going vertical (and flaming just before impacting behind a ridge) appears to be a Su-24.

But another still image of a flaming flat spiral is definitely a Flanker-variant (Su-27/30) - and completely unrelated.

I guess if the media has a pic of a jet on fire, that is close enough!

I await the protests that the Russians did not immediately run in and scoop up all of the unexploded cluster submunitions as soon as the smoke cleared.

(How does one know that this event was an attack on an ISIS position, per the youtube banner? In this conflict, it seems very hard to sort out the players without a program).

  1. That may take a while to sort out.
  2. Not sure the Russians are too concerned about that.

If true, there's no difference between them and Daesh.

Right.

ISIS persecution of gay men compounds fear for LGBT community in Muslim society where they're already isolated - CBS News

Let's see: in Russia, there is a non trivial amount of anti-gay rhetoric that is toxic and mean spirited. It appears to have Mr Putin's support.

Among the ISIS crowd, local judges convict men of being homosexual and then have them thrown off of the roof. (If that news report is not true, apologies for taking it at face value).

No difference. Sure.

Let's not forget that the Russians aren't using children to fight, unlike Daesh

it's quite telling when a poster here wonders how many children (whether fighters or not) are hit by a strike, rather than wondering if innocent people were hit whether they are men, women or children.

On the other hand, as the RAF USAAF/USAF etc have bombed targets in the past that would be known to kill civilians then I guess they would be seen as bad as Daesh too by some!

Possible, the Russians have deployed BM-30 Smerch

In Syria spotted Russian BM-30 heavy multiple rocket launcher | Defence blog

Reportedly used near Sukayka. "The town is called Sukayka and it is important for maintaining security in the Al-Suwaydaa` Governorate because it is only about 1 km from the Al-Tha’lah Airbase".

However, if so, the target was the Free Syrian Army and Turkmen, not ISIS.

As the original thread about shot down Su-24 is locked this link will fit rather here. Somebody did the job to geolocate the spot where the plane crashed and where the pilots landed. Seems like Russians lied in their statements.

As pprune disables the word b_l_o_g_s_p_o_t you have to type it in instead of asterisks.

BBC explain how Russia succeeded in feeding us a pack of lies about the SU-24 shoot down:
BBC Monitoring - Doubts cast on Russian TV's navigator interview

Anyone who believes anything sourced by the Russian state or their media is gullible in the extreme.
