For what its worth my wife and I watched the Prog and wondered then why he hadn't been awarded this honour.

We also wondered if he had already been offered it (or similar honour) but maybe he'd declined it?

I've added my vote to the Change list anyway.

Well done Rigga. 350 plus now, and I'm sure more to come. Thanks to all who have supported it so far, here's the link again to save page flipping ;

As of 2230 this evening 384, hopefully a good number for a few days. Well done all who have used their contacts to "get the vote out". More to come I'm sure.

Blimey Nutty,

That's a long way to go. However, as the Carpenters might say "we've only just begun", I hope that this is like a network thing (chain letter?), where as you get someone's signature, they tell two others . I've written to loads of people who may have influence now, so that's just a matter of waiting for results. 500N has also used his best influence to attract some support. I suppose give it some time is the answer. Thanks for the info though, I've just upgraded the target, considerably.

Then again, you could just submit an application and someone might
think it has merit on it's own, without any need for additional signatures !

There didn't seem to be a link on Arrse which has got to be a rich seam for signatures.
There is now.

Well done Tash,

I tried to post one on there, but it seems to have lost my login. I'll have to create a new one soon. Thanks for the help, 447 as of a few minutes ago, steady progress.

A quick update, as of 1000 this morning 24 April we have 508 signatures. Lets hope we can get some more a lot faster. Its a long way to get 100,000. But there's no rush, and hopefully, as more sign on, more will be made aware of it. Thanks to all who have signed and spread the word.

I think it would be reasonable to say I've shared a number of quiet beers with Simon - and quite a few very noisy ones.

I have let him know about this petition - and I'm fairly sure his response will be humble, grateful, and largely unprintable!

To those of you who didn't know, Simon was awarded an OBE some years ago for his charity work.

And reference the quote about the family in the restaurant saying unpleasant things about him - Whilst I have witnessed the like of these unpleasant comments whilst out drinking with him, I can also say that 99.9% of the good people of this land are totally respectful, welcoming and rather in awe of him. Which is curious, 'cos he really is a beer-swilling Taff.

John Nichol,

Thanks for that input. I'm sure that some perspective from someone who knows the man is invaluable. I suspect that Simon Weston is like many "real" ex servicemen who still have a grasp on reality, enjoys a few bevvies and is still doing so much for serving and ex injured servicemen. Beer swilling, well, who hasn't been there ? Anyway, as a personal friend of the man, perhaps you could assure him that our petition is no attempt to glorify him as some sort of Saint. It's more to do with recognising what is valuable and important to our nation in these days when even a win on "strictly come dancing" might elicit a gong from a "vote grasping" political party. Its time that the people decided who was honoured, not a politician with ulterior motives. As for the beer swilling, if he is ever near a pub I'm in, I would gladly fund a couple, for the honour. Thanks again for your post, I hope my response makes sense.

PS, if you are the John Nichol, Tonka Nav, we have actually met, in the back of a Herk many years ago.

Simon has responded thus:

"flattered....yak,yak......yup, still beer-swilling.........yak,yak......made me smile.....yak,yak....cross to bear - British by birth but WELSH BY THE GRACE OF GOD!!!"

& Smuj - I'm not sure if I am "the" John Nichol.....but I certainly am "a" John Nichol former GR1 Nav. And I certainly remember throwing up down the back of an Albert at 250ft on many occasions when I was on TCW as a Cpl!

John Nichol,

Thanks for that info, sounds like fun. Maybe he will make you laugh more when you take him for a "Knight" out. I know, Hat, coat.

Just 413 to make the thousand, I'm sure many can "rustle up" a couple of friends to get to 1000. I have the official form, I'm hoping to submit it with 1000 supporters. Sorry to bump this again, but I'm hoping for a bit of help.

Sorry gentlemen, I have my teeth into this now. We now have 600 signatures, but the going is slow. I plan to leave it live until the end of the month, then submit it with the official submission for awards. It would be nice to achieve a thousand signatures, so if any one can drum up a few more it would be great. I'm now holding my breath.

Thanks Redsnail,

That's what we need, a boost to get us to 1000, I know it sounds a low number, but when I sort it out and a thousand people support the official recommendation, they have to listen, surely.
