Lots of cynical comments above but lets be honest, it's really good news for the RAAF and shows a confident future for the MPA Force. I understand that capability will dip initially with the 'off the shelf' sensors that come with the package not being as good as what the AP-3C has but that's inevitable.
Get the airframes in first and upgrade over the next decade to a decent radar, ESM, acoustic suite etc...
Oh, and if the RAF stay out of the game after our next defence review, I suspect Edinburgh will shortly become home to a new set of P-8 instuctors with civilised accents!

RAAF aircraft will be Increment 2 standard (enhanced anti-submarine warfare) that Australia has co-developed with the US Navy, and which will be ready in 2015.
Increment 3, which will be ready in 2019, is still not defined but will likely be rolled out to RAAF aircraft at the same time as the US Navy's.
RAAF will have a common standard with USN.

any truth in the rumour that this is going ahead to give the RAAF a headstart so that they are a bit more competitive at Fincastle? I know, I know - "show us your MPA pommies" etc etc
Seriously, well done to a govt that invests appropriately in Maritime Surveillance - enjoy your new toys when you get them.

Of course everyone is happy for the RAAF and it is good news,
it's not the RAAF that is the problem, it's others
RAAF seems to have a good track record by buying off the shelf
- FA/18, SuperHornet, C-17, hopefully these.
