Quite so, Roly!

I wonder for quite how many of us the sequence went:

The Eagle / Biggles
Airfix kits
Air War Picture Library
C/L aeromodelling
R/C aeromodelling
Gliding
Flying Scholarship
RAF

Per Airfix ad Astra!

BEagle: You missed out reading the works of Capt W.E. Johns although in my case it was also Winton, Monsarrat, Alistair MacLean, etc., which is why I ended up messing around in boats and joining the Andrew.

A search in the Oxford English Dictionary came up with this definition:

decal /0ˈdi:kal/ noun. Chiefly N. Amer. M20.
[ORIGIN Abbreviation of decalcomania.]
A picture etc. prepared on special paper for durable transfer on to glass, china, plastic models, etc.

They will always be called transfers by this old codger!

Crikey! I had no idea this had advanced so far. Well beyond my ability.

I'm glad to hear that some of their recent offerings are better than the old ones (the only new Airfix kit I have tried in the last few years was the Nimrod, which was fine apart from the terrible decals!), but there are still plenty of the old Airfix moulds masquerading in nice modern-looking boxes - moulds which weren't that great 40 years ago and now are getting even worse! Compared to the likes of Trumpeter, Hasegawa, Tamiya, Italeri etc etc one has to have a real devotion to want to build an Airfix kit unless it is one of the unique ones!

And yes the Lynx looks amazing but some modellers (not me, I hasten to add) can work wonders with a poor kit - look at how some of the vacform kits turn out! I'm not saying the Lynx is a poor kit - I really don't know either way - but the fact that someone has made it look good doesn't necessarily mean that it's a sweet kit...

It is, I have built a couple but not to that standard. I don't have Tonys skills.

NutLoose. I made my stencils out of clear acetate sheet in '82. Cost bugger all, easily cleaned and still going strong. The low tack double tape sometimes leaves a mark on the previous paint, though. I still have a bottle (nearly) of Johnson's Klear; thankfully.

For what it's worth, apart from having a dad that built aeroplanes, Airfix had a lot to do with my obsession for flying machines.

A little story; Dad started a Frog Vulcan in '58 and never quite finished it. He built 4 white ones for other people. The fact that the nitro synthetic high speed silver paint (borrowed from New Assembly) pitted the plastic may have been a deciding factor. In '73, I found it in the loft and asked if I could finish it. On the afirm, I made it into a MK1A, moulded some missing U/C bits in resin, and made up intake blanks and the other stuff to make a diarama and he was chuffed to nuts. I now so wish that I'd finished it as it was, as XA891 in HS silver. Funny old world.

Torque

Airfix have come on leaps and bounds in recent years, even since the release of the Nimrod. As an example, and I know it's a big scale, have a look at the test shots in the link below.

Airfix announce new 1:24 Hawker Typhoon for 2014

Now if only Airfix would do a 1/72 VC10, I could complete my flying career in that scale!

Whilst I certainly don't have Nutty's skill and talent ... I don't mind admitting that a 1:48 Scale Chipmunk, WK518 in Training Command Red & White, is on the cards for the New Year ... provided Mrs Coff has got the "hints" dropped so far

Here is a completed example (Heritage Model Kit) by an expert modeller ...

Coff

Many thanks - wrong type of 10 though and I'm not sure my basic skills are up to resin.

There's some very nice work depicted in this thread. I have always viewed plastic modelling as a way to depict history in 3 dimensions. Airfix is certainly back with a vengeance, although not in 1/48th scale, sadly . Maybe in a few years time, though.... Their new kits are very good.

These are all either at 54Burg or the way, with the exception of the Javelin. I have been furiously lobbying my better half for it, and hope springs eternal.

Roland,

The Typhoon looks great! The 1/24 Mosquito is another I would love to try. Interesting that Airfix are confident there is sufficient demand for new 1/24 kits, especially as Trumpeter seem to have a habit of doing the same aircraft as Airfix in that scale but (dare I say it) to a rather better standard. I do have experience of both...the 1/24 Airfix Bf 109E, while a basic kit, makes into a good model, the P-51 is just about passable (although not great alongside the Trumpeter one) but the Hurricane, Fw 190A and Ju 87 somewhat poor and the Spitfire awful, even without the superior Chinese offerings! And one assumes the Trumpy Fw 190A and Ju 87 will also be quite nice...

I hope you get your VC10 - given the Nimrod and Valiant, you might just be in luck!

TOTD
