BAC 1-11 ZH763 final flight
ZH 763 will make its final flight tomorrow from Boscombe down to Newquay 11:30 take off. The museum will be its new home.
Dammit, and I was past there about that time today on the A303. Cannot make it tomorrow as I will be at the ceremony at the Bomber Command Memorial for the Free French squadrons that flew from Elvington

And may I say what a wonderful sight and sound it made as it overshot and then made its final approach with what looked like a combative crosswind. Well done to all.

I used to live under one of the departure routes out of Stansted (I was just north of Barkway). I have to say that noise from the turbojet powered 1-11 and early model B737 did more to stop Stansted expansion than any of the other campaigns. Sadly Joe Public still believes that ALL aircraft are just as noisy today. Last week I had to drop off my daughter at GLA. Modern aircraft make so little noise that the roar of road traffic – even from some distance - is far more intrusive.
Having said that, the 1-11 was pretty impressive for its time. I believe it had a higher cruise Mach No than do modern aircraft. I never flew them, only as passenger, but flew its successor the 146.

BAC 1-11 European Air Charter
Probably the biggest, recent operator of the BAC 1-11 was a company called European Air Charter which, although it's head quarters was at Bournemouth, had quite a big operation at it's STN base . . . for many an ex-military guy European was the first outfit they cut their civvy airline teeth on as they whizzed around Europe with a basic pair of VORs and NDBs to get them from A to B; we only got a strap-on gps when it became mandatory around '98ish ? Many happy days spent with them.
